Self studying APUSH -- will it make a difference?

I want to get straight A's all 4 years but APUSH is the only class people are almost guaranteed to get a B in.

Here are the AP's I will have taken (soph to senior yr):
AP Comp Sci

AP Calculus AB

AP Calculus BC
AP Physics C Mechanics
AP Chemistry

AP Spanish Lang

AP English Lang
AP Econ
AP Psych or Stats
AP Environmental or Bio
IB Math HL (might/might not take test since I'm not in IB)

If I self study APUSH and get a 5, will it make a difference on my college app? Is it bad that I am not taking APUSH?

The “5” will really depend on how well YOU prepare for the AP exam.

I took APUSH this year, my junior year, and it was not bad at all! I never received less than a 100 on each test, and my marking period grades were As, and my final grade for the year was an A, and all i did was self-study from the text book your teacher gives you.

For the AP exam, i was well-prepared, and i think i did well (not to sound cocky). My method was skimming over my notes in about 20-30 minutes. Then, i had Barron’s AP US History book, i read each section in there, and took the 2 practice MC tests. For the essays, just read them, and get an idea of what you would write. The AP exam this year focused ALOT on 60s - 80s.

No it won’t look bad that you don’t take APUSH. You have plenty of rigorous courses in your schedule.

The only people I have ever known who needed to take American History in college were those who were history majors, government majors, or earning a teaching certificate. If you are headed into one of those paths, then it may make sense to self-study APUSH in the hope of getting a score good enough to eliminate the course requirement. If you aren’t, then there are much better ways for you to use your time.
