Self-Studying Biology and Chemistry

Hi,

I'm homeschooled, and I don't know much of either Bio or Chem; I only know the absolute basics, if that, and I haven't taken any exams in the subjects. I'm applying to college this autumn. I have the Barron's Chemistry book and the Princeton Review Biology book, which people say cover both topics pretty well. My questions are:

-When should I start studying these if I want to do the Subject Tests in November/December? (I learn science subjects fairly quickly, and I'll be quite busy with other work up until July. Should I start then?)

-What do I have to learn beforehand? Which topics, etc? I've looked at my books and I should be able to start learning Chemistry immediately, but Biology requires a basic knowledge of organic chemistry. I'm not sure if anything else is required.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks :).

I self-studied Biology and took it in January 2009 after completing Biology in June 2008. I had ALOT to learn because I was only in Regular Biology, but I studied consistently for like a month beforehand and did pretty well (like 70th percentile).

I’m pretty much starting from scratch, although I learn science subjects quite quickly.

Bump. 10char

Chem will be harder to learn than bio.

And you really don’t need to know jack about orgo for bio, except maybe how to recognize a few molecules. Or for example, what makes something an aldehyde instead of a ketone. But nothing overly in depth at all.

OK… so I should take Chem in December and Bio in November?

Is there anything else I need to know before starting the books? And should I be able to learn them in about 5-6 months?

ketone and aldehyde ive never come across these terms in my honors biology class all i know is that there is a carboxyl and amino group, should i know whAT KETONE AND ALDEHYDE ARE?
