What is the best way to self study for an AP class, or any class? (Books, online, community college, etc.)
Do I need to talk to my counselor to arrange courses?
Last question, is self studying honestly worth it since it won't show up on my transcript?

Well, when you study an AP class typically it won’t show up on your high school transcript. You will just take the test and hope you get a score to get college credit. Your counselor only needs to order the test for you, or tell you where you need to take it (if not offered at your school). Only self-study if you are interested in the material and if you think you will get credit towards your college degree.

As for the best way to self-study, depends on the test and whether you actually want to learn the material… Some take more commitment than others.

If you want to learn: get a textbook AND a review book. Read the textbook, follow the reviewbook, do practice problems etc.

If you want to just pass the test: Get a reviewbook and read it 2 or 3 times and do an occassional practice problem.
