Self-studying latin? (not for AP)

I've always wanted to learn Latin. My school offers the class, but to take it I would have to drop spanish-and that will never happen. Well anyway, I was wondering your opinion on the difficulty of doing this for the average student. More particularly:
1) How difficult?
2) How long would it take to get up to the ap level (though I don't want to take it, just be on that level)?
3) Any textbooks, books, dvds/cds, websites that would help me?
4) Have heard of anyone being successful in self-studying?
5) Any other tips or words of advice?

I could understand using tapes and books to teach yourself Italian or even French, but Latin would be tough to learn all by yourself.

1) Latin would be awfully tough unless you have a really excellent command of grammar. And even then it’d be tough.
2) Well, depends how much time you put in. In my HS you take AP Latin in the fourth year. You have about 4-5 hrs of class time per week, not counting hw…
3) Look on Amazon for reviews of beginning Latin textbooks.
4) Nope. Then again, I’ve never heard of anyone NOT being successful in self-studying Latin, since I’ve never heard of anyone self-studying it.
5) I wouldn’t do it. You couldn’t take Latin in school and self-study the Spanish? Just wait for college. Possibly you could attempt it over the summer, but I think it would just be too confusing and difficult.
