Hi, I'm a sophomore and I'm taking AP Chemistry and AP European History. However, I want to take another AP exam so I want to self-study microeconomics.

How and when should I start? Do I need a textbook to understand the material, or can I use several review books only? What online resources should I use? Thanks. :)

I personally would self study for a different one. I’m taking Microeconomics right now, and while it’s fairly easy and most of it is common sense, I feel like if it wasn’t for my teacher being so good at what she does then I wouldn’t be able to understand it that well. Having it taught to me makes it so easy but I feel like trying to teach it to myself would have me very lost and confused. But nonetheless, I would buy a few prep books. I have 5 Steps to A 5, which my teacher required, but I don’t feel like it’s that helpful. I don’t really use it much though, and I haven’t opened my textbook once all year so I can’t say much about that. (Luckily for me, my teacher literally fills your brain with knowledge so studying is unnecessary.)

Edit: Actually after looking at all the other AP’s, Microeconomics would probably be an easier one to self study for.

The problem with self-studying other courses is that they are all offered at my school and I’m planning on taking most of them. I was going to self-study Psychology but I heard that my school is bringing it back next year.

Thanks for your input. I’ll buy some prep books.

It isn’t as hard as stepabs makes it out to be. Just use PR/Barron’s/5 Steps, whatever, they’re all really good for microeconomics, and go through it. I think you will understand it.

Micro and Macro are jokes. I used 5 Steps to a Five the DAY BEFORE THE TEST, with zero previous knowledge of economics, and got a 5 on Micro and a 4 on Macro.

I also recommend Princeton Review’s book, which one of my friends used and got a 5.

That’s why I changed my mind! I think the 3 easiest to self study for would probably be AP Micro, AP Calculus AB, and AP Psychology. You should be able to do it. But Econ isn’t a complete joke for everyone. I mean, I actually understand it and don’t even have to study to get A’s and B’s on the tests but I know plenty of people who study their asses off and still fail them. I feel like it’s one of those subjects where you either really understand it and it comes easy for you, or you don’t understand it at all.

But I wouldn’t get 5 Steps to A five; it isn’t thorough at all. Barron’s seems to be the best choice with most subjects.
