I’m a rising sophomore that, next year, is taking three AP courses at my high school–Chemistry, US History, and Statistics. Because I have always found World History interesting, and my school doesn’t offer it as an AP, I’d like to self-study it.
Additionally, because I can take the Art History AP Exam to bypass the California school a-g requirements, I’d like to self-study that too. My school doesn’t offer it either.
What are your recommendations? Is either self-study a no-go? I’m thinking that the APUSH I’m taking in school will help me prepare for the FRQs on the World History exam since they are of the same discipline.
The most important issue–I need a recommendation for textbooks for the self-studies. I’m thinking for AP World History I’d get “Traditions and Encounters” by McGraw Hill, but I have no idea for Art.
Hi I just took the AP World history class & exam myself and we used “Ways of the World” by Strayer for our textbook and our teacher very strongly recommended the Princeton Review Premium edition prep book. Self-studying for the WHAP test might be pretty hard but if you study hard I’m sure you could do it. If you do go through with self-studying for the WHAP exam make sure you go to the college board website and read over the outlines, past essay question’s, past DBQ’s, multiple choice questions, etc. and try to do some of them yourself…the more practice writings and practice questions you do the better. The AP US history test has the same writing rubrics as the WHAP test so you are right that it will prepare you in how to write the different sections. I’m planning on self- studying for a couple of AP tests myself including AP art history as well. Good luck!
P.s. A good website to use for notes, etc. is whap.mrduez.com
Art History is a lot of memorization, so good luck with that and AP World, I agree with the poster above for what you should do for AP World. As for Art History, the common textbook is Gardner’s “Art Through the Ages.” You might also pick up the Annotated Mona Lisa as a prep book. Best of luck to you!
