Hey, I'm a senior in HS currently in IB English HL. I have not taken AP Lit or AP Lang, but would like to take one or both of he exams this year. Which one is easier to self-study and get a 4 or 5? Also, what are the differences?

It depends on your interests/strengths.

I found AP Language exponentially easier. The three essays are argumentative/persuasive, which is my strength. The MC passages are pretty similar to SAT passages (they are obviously a bit more complex, but the style is similar). The passages you read will all be non-fiction.

AP Literature is a lot harder for me because it focus on fiction, which I don’t do as well with. The three essays will ask you to analyze literature, and one of the three will be about a poem. Another one is a “free essay” so to speak, so you will have to talk about a book you’ve read that relates to a given prompt.

I would suggest looking at the released FRQ’s for last year to get a feel for which you are more interested in/ better at. In general, if you prefer reading fiction and analyzing passages is one of your strengths, AP Lit will be a better choice. If you don’t really like reading stories and you prefer argumentative/persuasive writing, AP Language is the better choice.

Once you decide which one you prefer, I would suggest printing off the FRQ’s from the last few tests and writing an essay for all of them (I’d suggest doing at least 4-6 of each essay style, so 12-18 total, and more if you it’s necessary). The essays account for 55% of your score, so it’s definitely more important to master them than the multiple choice. The multiple choice is pretty similar to ACT/SAT MC, so if you did fairly well on those you don’t need as much practice with multiple choice.
