Self-updated Improvement Thread: I can do this!

Okay. I got a 1550 on my first SAT, with a 510M, a 460CR, and a 580W. I'm going to take my second SAT for the last time this November and I'm aiming for a 2300. This means I need to get around a 770 in each section.

With a score of 510, this means I need an improvement of 200 points in Math.

With a score of 460, this means I need an improvement of 300 points in Critical Reading.

With a score of 580, this means I need an improvement of 200 points in Writing.

Put it altogether, and I need a total improvement of 700 points before November!

In 73 days.

Now I just didn't start studying now. I've been studying since July (when I was going to take it in October), but not strong enough. It was all unfocused and my studying hours were on and off. I don't think I got much from July, but I've started to have a firm hold of my studies in August. I just need to work harder.

So, in an attempt to motivate myself, I've decided to make myself a thread where I would post the scores I earned from the daily practice tests that I'm going to do. My dad wanted me to do three practice tests at once, every single day, but I thought this would be too overwhelming..I can barely sit straight to take even one! We're talking about 9 or maybe 10 hours of uninterrupted testing time. I'll explode!

So instead, I've decided to take 9 sections of just one subject each day. For example, on Monday I would take 9 Math sections, Wednesday, 9 CR sections and so on. That way, I would get enough practice for each section, and it wouldn't be a hefty load. It would just equal the time it takes to complete one practice test.

After I'm done with everything, I will come to this thread and post my scores. I'll compare them with others and see if I'm really improving or not. This should somewhat motivate me to work harder.

Math and Writing (my strongest SAT subject) should be a piece of cake, since I've heard that they're easier/faster to improve in a short amount of time. Critical Reading..weell..that's another story. >_<

Hopefully, this thread will help me reach my goal. It will at least give me a reason to complete 9 sections in one sitting.

Well..that's it! I wish you all good luck with your SAT studies!

Today, I wasn't able to do 9 Math sections, just only 3. My score turned out to be a 533..a 20 pt increase. It's alright, but I'm not that overjoyed. I hope to improve the next time around and get a higher score increase. ._.

Good luck, I'm trying to make some improvements myself.

Yeah GardenMaiden. Im in the same boat as you. Im hoping for a big increase.. cept im taking the october test and i need to get over 2300..

i'm trying get a 2000 got a 1260 last time..I think i can do it..Today i did a math on PR and got a 470 from 330 not a big improvement but i think i can get 600 if i go over wht i got wrong and understand more concept i can do good...Last time i took a CR test on Barrons CR wrk bk the diagnostic test i got a 560 from a 440..I'm going up and i can get a 700..

i took 1800 on my first SAT. a whole 800 came from Math, and CR and W were both around ~500. And my goal is to get over 2100. Everyone ganbatte!!!

I'm trying to get my terrible math into the upper 500s.

This is a lovely thread!
I am also trying to bring my scores up by 300-500 pts =)
Good luck to us all!!

hey guys glad to see that you are all studying hard, same boat here...can't raise cr and w

but i got some tips if you want to do well in math.

when i start my math grade was like 500 but just after like a month of study it;s up to the 690-750 range

the secrect...take a prep class...kidding

when you do the math try to look for the concept behind it, when you get it wrong figure out how ti;s suppose to be done...there are more than one way and the ones in the book aren't always the best. whenever there is a concept taht you do not get, practice the poop out of it. next time when you see the problem, you won't even be scared of it. so instead of using all of the tactics and tips, try to understand the problem, pretty sure non of them are gonna be something you have never seen before, actually become one with the math, so for every problem, solve the question that it's asking you, to get an exact answer, why use poe when you can know for certain, i think working out the problem can be time consuming but it you practice you can make your work very effiecent.

practice makes perfect.

Again, I wanted to do 9 CR sections today, but I ended up doing only 3. I recieved a 493 as my overall score..not much of a score increase..AGAIN. XP Blah..I need to get up to the 500s..I don't know what's wrong with me. Before I take a section, I'm all "Yes, I know I can do this. I will nail this section for sure!". Then, when I actually hit the Critical Reading section, I end up doing lousy and missing like 8 or 9 questions because of the time. I hate the passages, I hate the vocab..I just hate everything that has to do with CR. PERIOD. >_<

I guess my studying schedule is kind of messed up this week, so hopefully I'll be back on track by Monday. D: I got to get a 2300, I just gotta! It's now or never!

Ipam45: Thank you so much for the advice, btw! I would love to bring my math into the upper 600-700s! I just got to work harder and practice more math! Someone told me on here that they've gotten their Math scores into the 700s with only two months of prep. If you and him/her can do it, then so can I!

you definatly can but i gotta say that another one of my secret is being asain or at least having asian parents...that was racist... they have helped me so much with my math and just even problem solving skills. i think my score probably be in the 600s without their help, not just math help but help by pushing me to study harder.

i just took 3 sections of cr and i got a 560...which is actually average
but what is interesting is that the ration of wrong scores in each of my sections it ranges from 3/19 good to 8/23 medium to a 12/25 horrible, why are my scores sooo inconsistent unlike my math score which i always miss 2 in each section and most of them are just careless mistakes...

if anyone can give me any tips on cr and w that would be appriciated, or some key skills that i just need to understand

good luck gardenmaid...we can do this together...

the god darn sat is just some bull$h!t !!!

M 680 CR 680 W 720

Trying to raise to M 750 CR 750 W 800

Well, don't worry, because I have a say in this too! When I took the PSAT for the first time in Oct 2006, my Math really stank! So bad! I got a 41, which would've been a 410 on a real SAT. When I was prepping for my first SAT, I took a CB practice test and my score range for math was a 350 - 430! Could you actually believe that I got a 510 on a real SAT? If I prepped for SAT Math alone, without any help, I wouldn't have gotten that far. I have my parents to thank for that score increase. They are both excellent in Math as well, so they helped me a lot, especially my Mom. :) They are still helping me out now too.

Without my parents, I would've been around the 400s right now. D:

So you aren't the only one. :D

Ewww on my first practice test (the one on the collegeboard site) I got: CR: 530, W: 520, and M:500...so thats like a 1550. ='( Stupid sentence completions ='(

i hate cr and w...who the hell ever needed to used grammar correct

as you can see i did not use grammar properly yet you understood what i was trying to say

Through practice and prayer, I also plan on improving my SAT scores
Current:1950= M 590 CR 660 W 700
Goal: 2120 M 650 CR 750 W 720

I"m with you guys
Right now: M 740, W 690, CR 610.
Goal: M 800, W 760, CR 690

I hate the CR. I just hate it. my score range is so wide and I can't seem to improve. I've gotten down to 560 once, but also went up to 650 at one point in time.

For math, two weeks ago I was at 680 missing like two a section, but now it's just 3 or 4 questions total. The secret is practice. Seriously. Practice helps immensely for math. But not just mindless practice. Actually concentrate on why you got the things you got wrong and if you keep on getting those types of problems wrong, then practice only those types. Like for example, I was struggling with geometry, and got a couple math workbooks and worked through all the geometry questions and now I do not fear geometry questions as much as I had before. I hope this makes sense...

i just found my old psat scores. this was taken last october

m: 53 R: 54 W: 38!!!!!

that is freaking ridiculous, how the heck did i do sooo bad...

any scoring updates people

a whole test today...i got a lot of time on my hand

W:520 cr:670?!?!?! M:720

I was going to take a full length practice test today, but my "studying" attitude wasn't into it at all. I knew if I forced myself into taking the practice test, I'd get lousy with the questions, and I would score horribly. So I guess I skipped out on that today (which I shouldn't have done :X Silly me.). I just can't stand sitting in my seat for 3 and 1/2 hours, doing nothing but practice tests. If it was at a real test center, and it was the real test, sure I can take it, because it's the real thing! But at home..I think I would explode. But what's gotta be done, gotta be done..I'll try squeezing in three practice tests per day, starting from September. I should have more time during September and October, since I'm homeschooled, and since my annoying siblings will finally leave me alone in the morning to go to school. >.>..AND since I'll discipline myself to sleep early and not at 2-3 am in the morning. (Wants to be an early bird nowadays).

My mom says I should do two practice tests per day at least, so I think I'm going to drop the whole "nine section a day thing" and go with normal practice tests. I'll try two for now, and as the days go by, I'll go with three (like my dad suggested earlier). I think that way, I'll get more practice. I also have to do math everday, so I won't forget anything..so there goes the "individual SAT subject per day" plan. I need a new SAT study plan, and I also need to PASS!! D:

I did two timed writing sections today. Total score turned out to be a 575 - 5 points below my original SAT Writing score. What's up with me and these small score increase/decreases nowadays?!

How are you guys coming along?

Hey,
I know it's hard to motivate for some of us. You should encourage friends to study with you, i think it helps at least for me.

Thanks for your update.
