Sell me Duke

[YouTube - This is Duke.](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaW_zLBxL2s&feature=youtube_gdata)

I appreciate the help (minus interestingguy)

I visited TCU on a Saturday which COLLEGE GAMEDAY was on campus, for the TCU vs. Utah game, while I saw Duke on a monday morning during a cold (cold!) front.

Also, that did sound pretty arrogant about TCU hookem, I’d be interested to hear what you think makes TCU so much worse.

(Keep in mind, TCU is a 5 hour drive for me, while Duke is 2 plane rides away)

I love Texas, I love the South, and I’m not sure Duke has much “southern” aspect to it.

I’m also concerned that at TCU, I could be in the honors program, have a 4,0 etc., while at Duke I’ll be killing myself on a routine basis just to keep a 3.0.

But Duke is ranked as a “jock school” by Princeton Review, which is me. But I didn’t see that. Duke is ranked as having great Greek life, and I didn’t see that.

Also, I HATED Durham, while I loved Fort Worth, but most Dukies say Durham really isn’t a big deal at all and that you don’t hardly go off campus anyways.

Plus, TCU has a 60:40 girl to guy ratio, and Texas girls are well…in a different league :)

So, there’s my debate.

No need to apologize for your essential Dukie nature. We understand.

IG, I used to mildly respect you for your fact-checking (very mildly haha), but you messed up this time. I didn’t even apply to Penn. Didn’t even consider it. Better luck next time.

Excuse me, I must have mistaken you for one of the many other Dukies that the Ivy League didn’t want. Maybe it was this kid (post #4):

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/duke-university/682160-thank-you.html</a></p>

Good luck with the 179 LSAT, btw.

Ah, be careful when you say “the Ivy League.” I only applied to HYP. That’s it. 'Twas I who didn’t want UPenn, Dartmouth, Columbia, Brown, or Cornell, not even a little bit.

P.S. You’ve posted the link to that thread 2 or 3 times at this point. Got it bookmarked for easy access, eh? Also, if you’d like a status update, I’ve got a 4.0 in my first semester here. Looks like I’m exceeding my own high expectations.

Living proof of grade inflation at Duke…

Riddle me this: What do you call a perfect 4.0 Duke student?

An HYPS reject.

^ Not true. I’m the only person I know with a 4.0. Two of my friends failed/had to drop out already. I know tons of people with Cs. Don’t be jealous because I work my ass off while you sit around, trying to think of ways to hate on Duke.

Furthermore, I suppose you could argue for inflation in two of the classes (although I’d dispute it), because the grades are largely based on papers (still, I know plenty of classmates who’ve made Bs or lower on them), but the other 2 classes I’m in are 100% objective and entirely uncurved. In both classes, I made the highest grade in the class on the most recent tests. Do us all a favor: just be quiet.

To the OP: The difference in the level of education and prestige is enormous. Who do you think an employer is more likely to hire; a Duke graduate, or a graduate from some weird religious school in Texas that nobody has ever heard of?

Even if you like the Texas school more, it would still be a bad choice to go there because of all you’d be losing out on. But that raises the question of how it is possible to like that school more than Duke.

Guys, ignore interestingguy…
Based on all his posts, yes, he may go to a better school than Duke (according to USNews rankings, which don’t really tell much anyway), but is jealous because Duke focuses much more on undergrad studies, offers more opportunities, and is way more fun. I’ll take those at the sacrifice of a few USNews spots.

Besides, he also doesn’t get into Cameron basketball games for free, like we do. I don’t care how much he wants to say that all we care about is basketball. It’s called “basketball envy.” He’s jealous that we can do something fun at night while he’s in his room procrastinating for an essay by posting insults to Duke on collegeconfidential. We, at Duke, have much better ways to spend our procrastination time.

OP, I’d say apply to both TCU and Duke and see where things fall. If you get the choice to decide, then try and make this decision. But all in all, I have two things I always say when a pfrosh asks me about duke:

1) best decision I’ve ever, ever made in my life
2) I have YET to encounter someone who does not ABSOLUTELY LOVE duke
for all it is

so if you’d like specific questions answered, fell free to PM me. But beyond that, selling duke is awkward and unnecessary.

Really? I’m glad you and your imaginary friends are so forgiving. I’m oh so appreciative.

College visits are, in my opinion, misleading. It’s still nice to see the schools first-hand but as a freshmen, I can tell you I’ve been living here for four months and I still couldn’t tell you what a “typical Duke student is like” or how to “describe Duke”.
Honestly, you’ll probably end up going some place and liking it no matter what, especially if the schools you’re looking at are of Duke’s caliber.
My two cents about why you should come to Duke: Duke is a very integrated, welcoming community. Graduate schools will welcome undergraduates for lectures and events. Professors are accessible. Frat parties, rather than being exclusive, will post fliers for parties.

Not just “a few” spots and certainly not just according to USNews…

rolls eyes

Yeah, I am very “envious” that my degree won’t be devalued by borderline reta…, er, I mean, academically challenged “student athletes.”

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/duke-university/251415-duke-athlete-admissions.html</a></p>

"Yet the most elite recruits (read: prospective basketball players) can be tentatively admitted before they’ve finished their junior year of high school; all that’s needed is a PSAT score and freshman and sophomore grades.

This must have been how our beloved Sean Dockery got admitted with a 2.3 GPA and an ACT score of 15; at the time, his credentials didn’t even meet NCAA minimums of a 2.5 GPA and 17 on the ACT.

Which brings me to my point: Although I, too, will never forget the night Sean Dockery beat VT, this snapshot of our admissions process is a University-wide disgrace."

(Duke Chronicle)

I am sure the nice Merit Scholarship made them feel much more “prized”…

I just read briefly through this thread. I’m really intrigued.

Why is interestingguy so against Duke, especially if he goes to a better school like he claims?

He’s a ■■■■■, and he has no life. Just ignore him.

where exactly DOES he go to school?

I think he’s actually a Duke wannabe
