I was accepted to engineering, but am not to sure if I would like Villanova. So can you tell me why(in your opinion) I should go to Nova?

bump. esp for Villanova school of business.

My S also accepted–here’s what he likes about Nova Engineering:
Reputation (US News, etc.); 5 yr Masters program & access to classes in school of business; Smaller class sizes (esp. compared to UMich where he was also accepted); suburban setting with easy access to Philly.

Thanks ELY. Do you know if an engineers can graduate with an MBA in 5 years?

YES, Zman. From their website:

“Within each of the five disciplines, undergraduate engineering students have the option of graduating with both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree within a formal, five year program. Qualified students typically begin the program during their senior year, and complete the requirements for the master’s program during the fifth year. Students interested in this program are encouraged to discuss this option with their academic advisor, and may apply during their junior year.”

Have you visited? Where else are you considering?

There are a lot of hot women.

I haven’t visited yet. I am also considering UMD, UMBC, Grove City, and Duke (my reach I kinda doubt will get in). Is your son currently attending or will he begin in the fall? Thanks.

My S is currently a HS Sr. He also applied to UMD & Lehigh.
You should definitely visit Nova on their accepted student day.

Ok thanks for the info. I’ll be sure to try to go on accepted student day.

Im a freshman engineer at nova now and love it. message me if you have any specific questions or anything else i can answer!

water1234, my daughter was accepted EA for engineering. Villanova is very high on her list. Can you tell us about the first year courses - are they large lectures with breakouts into smaller groups? What do you think of the engineering courses so far?
And, does it matter if you are not Catholic?

Regarding "does it matter if you are not Catholic? "
If you don’t mind seeing priests on campus and crosses on the outside of the buildings , it will not matter. There is no religious pressure or any issues if you don’t attend mass.
However , there is a theology requirement (2 classes ) and the adminstration has shown no flexibility on the 1050 level class. There is some flexiblity on the upper level requirement.

Do not expect tp be allowed to substitute THL 1050.

[The Core Curriculum](COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES | Villanova University)
Theology and Religious Studies - 2 courses:

Successful completion of THL 1050 and a second Theology and Religious Studies course with a course number of 2000 or higher.
The required introductory course, Theology and Religious Studies 1050, is an academic presentation of Christian thought, suitable for any student. It is normally taken during the sophomore year. In special cases, the following courses may be substituted for this course with permission from the Dean: THL 2800; THL 5400; THL 5800; THL 5900.

Does anyone have an idea about what merit aid is like? I have decent stats and was going to apply for Presidential but the people at Nova told me that homeschoolers never get it. Could I get any aid with a 1490 and 4.0 UW (I have online AP courses to back that up)?

I’m a Sophomore VSB student, feel free to PM with any questions. I’ll try to check at least once daily.

My S. got deferred from VSB. Can you tell me if you know very many kids that got deferred to the VSB got in regular decision?

dedicatedmother- i was deferred too just like your son. i heard that RD acceptance rates are much better than EA, but im not sure as to how true that is.

i love my engineering course for freshman year. freshman year is pretty much broken up into quarters as far as content of the course but you are graded by the semester. for the first 7 weeks of school i sat in a lecture hall of about 70 and we used a book to learn basic information. we did one microproject a week that was interdisciplinary. the course was not difficult, and focused more on practical engineering projects, working in teams, and allowed us to see what each of the different disciplines would entail. then at mid semester, we put in for our top 3 miniprojects. you were assigned to one depending on your rankings of the different projects. you worked on this project for 7 weeks. now in the second semester, we got to pick another project to work on for 7 weeks. after this project we will work in our disciplines, but i am not exactly sure what we will do.

engineering was big in the beginning but you worked in groups of 7-8 so it never felt that way. each project class is made up of about 20 students who then break down into groups.

my calc class had 20 in it which was perfect.

my chem class had about 70 in it for a lecture 3x a week then broke into a group of about 20 for recitation 1x a week

my theology had about 30

acs had 16

chem lab had about 40 but you do the experiments on your own and TAs assist so size didnt really matter.

any more questions?? hope this helped!!
overall, i never felt the classes were too big. professors were always available for help in office hours, after class, email, or phone.

why don’t you kids let us know what kinda things you’d like about the school and what you wouldn’t like and we’ll tell you how it is here?

Do you think mid-year grades can help if you’re borderline? I applied EA for VSB but was placed in RD and I just finished up with my midterm exams and I’m almost positive my GPA is going to go up & hopefully my class rank. I’m trying to get as many A’s for the symmester as possible cause I want to go to this school more than anything.

Also, how well do the Commuters fit in at the school? If I am fortunate to get in, I’d be commuting & I’m curious as to whether or not they meet a lot of people because I love meeting tons of different people. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Ok, so if i offend anyone, I would like to apologize upfront.

I am from the deep, deep south. As a proud southern(catholic) boy, partying is part of my upbringing and culture, and alcohol is not looked down upon. I have been accepted EA but am worried about a few things. What is the social scene like? I have heard very mixed response. My cabbie said the Nova kids pretty much live the animal house mentality(that is very much me) and then others say it is practically a dry campus. Have you enjoyed your first few semesters? I have read elsewhere that the cops are always looking to bust nova kids.

Also what is the aid like? I need roughly 10-15k. I got 13k from drexel down the road. Will nova match that? Act: math-34 science-35 composite-31
