I was hoping that someone on this forum could help me. I am a high school student and a cellist -- I have been playing since I was 6 years old. I play in a youth orchestra, but I will not be studying music in college. I am in need of some money right now and I was wondering if you all could recommend somewhere that I could list 2 of my old cellos -- a 1/2 and a 3/4 size. I can't list them on ebay, but I have listed them locally. No response, not entirely surprising since I live in a very rural area -- not many young cellists around here. Is there some place to list them where they will be seen by an appropriate and potentially interested audience? Thanks so much for any advice or suggestions.

Why not?

Can you post flyers at music schools in your region or at music shops? Perhaps contact local music teachers? Some music shops will also sell instruments on consignment for you.

You will have a tough time selling 1/2 and 3/4 side cellos, as many people rent until full size is required. You could contact a school with a string program and see if they have anyone looking.

Sometimes the Musician’s Union paper will list instruments for sale-perhaps the nearest local might be a possibility. Craigslist might be a an option too, just don’t send anything to Nigeria that requires a deposit. : (

You might have a hard time with those, because as others have said usually people rent those size of instrument (not always, but often). One thought might be to talk to music stores that rent instruments, because those sizes are commonly rented, maybe they would want them for their rental stock? I guarantee you your instrument is probably in better shape then a lot of their rentals:)

Yeah, the rental instruments were so horrible, that is why my parents started buying them for me. My 1/4 size is kind of special to me, so I don’t want to sell it, but the other two I really have no use for any more. They were purchased from Southwest Strings (their Klaus Mueller line) and they really are nice. Plus, instruments need to be played.
Thanks so much for your suggestions. I can’t list them on ebay because of their PayPal requirements. Our family had a really bad experience with PayPal and my father won’t have anything to do with them any more. It is a shame because there is really no other platform like it for selling items like this.
I will attempt to contact some music schools and shops. The only problem is that they are so far away. Online would be so much easier for me. That is another reason that my parents decided to purchase the cellos – the nearest rental place is about 1 1/2 hours away (the same city where I play in the youth orchestra). I am usually there in the evenings for rehearsals and all of the stores are already closed. It’s always something it seems.
Oh well, I am sure that I can find them a good home eventually. Thanks again, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well!

It occurs to me that your teacher and youth orchestra conductor might be good contacts for this, since they both know you and your instruments and they would be in a position to know other your cellists looking for something nicer than the normal rentals available.

I bought mine used off Craigslist. Are you close enough to a major area that you could list it on their craigslist? I would have purchased those! If the price were reasonable.

We just got the newest viola from consignment as I never saw anything of this type selling on Craigslist.

Also, you could try to go through your teachers. Anyone who is teaching children who would use that size might be interested. I hated renting and always bought after my first rental experience.

I can’t stand ebay personally. So, I don’t blame you at all for staying away from it.

I think I will try Craigslist – I need to research how it works. Yeah, that is how my parents were. After renting my brother’s first 1/10 size violin, they never rented again. The smaller instruments never sound as good as the full size, but some definitely sound better than others!
My current cello teacher is a college professor and he does not work with very young children, he barely wanted to take me on when I was 14. My mother begged because she did not feel like I was progressing with my first teacher. I might get up the courage to ask my youth orchestra conductor – she scares me just a little bit.
I just thought there might be some forums that I was unfamiliar with. For example, my younger sister is really into recurve archery and she has been able to get a lot of reasonably priced used equipment on some archery forum that her and my father found. I thought there might be something like that for instruments.
Thanks again!

There is a cellist forum. [Internet Cello Society Forums Forums](http://cellofun.yuku.com/) Note the “Young Cellists” thread.

Thanks you, lorelei2702, I will check it out this evening.

We sold my son’s upright bass through Craigslist. there are some scammers on there, so you have to beware. We got a couple of inquiries stating that they wanted to buy the instument sight unseen, and they wanted the instument shipped, and they would pay us though paypal for it. Just don’t respond to anything like that.

We did sell it to a nice guy who wasn’t a scammer.

If you play in a youth orchestra, perhaps someone younger than you is looking for a cello. I would start there.
