Hi, I am in a real dilemma here. I've got the sembcorp scholarship from NTU. the scholarship is very generous as it covers everything, from tuition fees to living expenses. but the downside is that there is a six year bond with the sponsoring company, or its subsidiaries or other singapore registered company. idk if it is possible to run away after graduation. for the last two years, they say that the contract is only a formality, which is not for real. but idk if it will be the same by the time i graduate.

on the other hand, i also have an offer from hku for engineering under the 3 year program, with an entrance scholarship of HKD 120K.

any suggestion ? I really can't decide.

I’ll say HKU because it’s reputable and well-known within the region. You’ve also got a scholarship there, which is fantastic. If you’re having doubts about the NTU scholarship, I’d suggest you don’t accept it, because you may regret having to work for the sponsoring company for 6 whole years (although of course this guarantees you a job for that period).

The other reason is that studying overseas will open up a new world of opportunities for you. You’ll get to experience a different culture, meet different people, try new activities, experience new weather, etc. You’ll also learn how to cope on your own and be independent.

My opinion, anyway.

thanks for your opinion. However, I really want to stay in Singapore permanently. Do you think that a HKU grad will be in demand in Singapore, compared to NTU and NUS grad ?

I don’t think it’s going to matter. Whatever university you go to, you’ve got to excel. You should look at what the university offers you. For instance, are there internship opportunities? Research opportunities? Because those are the things which employers will look at.
