I think i might end up getting a D in my ap english class. my teachers very hard and not the nicest person. I had two family deaths earlier in the year and since then my grade suffered. Im going in to talk to him today to see if theres anything else i can do but if i end up getting the D i was thinking of taking writing 1 at a community college from 3/19/07 - 5/17/07. good idea? if i end up getting the D, should i say anything to the admissions people?

Would definitely walk with your admissions' counselor about any D & consider taking the community college writing course to show that you can write & it was just an abberation & stress that caused this lowered grade. (Maybe wait & find out if you really get a D; if you get a C, you might not worry as much.

i just got a D in AP Calc... my principal said he would write a letter of explanation for me, but someone else told me most colleges wont let you in with an outstanding D... my principal says if they admit me they won't revoke my application when they see the D, especially with an explanation... ive got like a 3.6 UW gpa this semester otherwise... any suggestions?

I guess it might depend on what's IN the explanation. It might be worthwhile having you & our HS counselor contact your USC Admissions' Counselor & ask them what to do. I know they've been pretty forgiving of Cs, but not sure about Ds.

I got a D in regular English second semester senior year and wasn't revoked.

However, it was my 9th semester English class (I had already completed the 4 year English requirement)

So it sounds like Bs are fine, Cs are so-so-okay, and Ds are bad?

For senior year, yea, that seemed like how things were for my S. He got As, a few Bs & I think one or two Cs. He had no problems & they still gave him his merit scholarships. Didn't get any Ds & I got the feeling that most Us would want a GOOD explanation other than just "senioritis" for such a drop in grades. USC is pretty understanding/tolerant, but they want students to take their academics seriously.

ok so we've established that ok grades don't hurt and bad grades are...well, bad. so how much can good grades help? i'm about to finish finals and my grades look like
Calculus I-A
Physics-A
AP Gov-A
AP Lit-A-/B+
i'm also in asb and volleyball
also, i'll most likely be named captain of my volleyball team, but not for a few more weeks. will it be too late to let usc know? will my grades be enough to push me over the top if i'm on the border for a scholarship?

If your school does semester grading, I would have your GC write a letter explaining the circumstances (it's definitely not a cheap excuse in this case!) when/if USC requests midyear grades from you or when you must send your final transcripts. Personally I'd try to postpone telling them until you have to, so you have a chance to bring your grade up second semester and show them that you've bounced back. If your school does year grading, a D one quarter or even two isn't a big deal at all if you're confident you can get good grades the rest of the year.

no im dropping AP calc no matter what... i might go into regular where i hear its pie to get an A so that might help. i think getting a D is reason enough to show there is a problem with me in that class.
