I have always wanted to do a semester at sea, but I just found out that USC no longer gives credit for this study abroad option!

Does anyone have any information about this??

USC has many study abroad options, but they don't feel that semester at sea has the type of setting and education level appropriate for their students. At USC, the immersion experience is one of the centerpieces of studying abroad. In the semester at sea program, students travel constantly throughout different countries, generally staying with the other American students on their ship, instead of experiencing the cultures on their own. Also, ships stay at port for only a short period of time, keeping students from being a part of the country's culture.

USC has plenty of awesome study abroad programs. I treasure my own semester abroad, and I'm very glad that I went. Here is the website of USC's programs, for further information:

Here are a few more posts on the topic of the Semester at Sea program. It seems that banning it is pretty normal for universities to do.

Yeah... SaS is just a 4-month long party. I'm glad USC doesnt give any credit for it.

When I went to SC (1980-83) it was known for being a 4 month party-at-sea. Its a different university now. But I would not let my daughter go on it.
