Do colleges look at individual semester grades for each year in high school, or do they look at final year grades, or do they just look at cumulative gpa?

thanks, i appreciate your answers.

they look at final year grades as well as cumulative gpa.

Depends on the college.

Most of the time they look at semester and cumulative GPA. If you're talking about senior grades, then some do semester, some do final only, most do both.

What is the final grade. Is it the 2 semesters added together and averaged out?

yes that is what I would consider the final grade.

It also depends on what your high school sends. My d's high school sends only final, not semester, grades for freshman, sophomore and junior years; it only sends semester grades for seniors in the midyear report.

Colleges cannot consider what they do not see.

What if your grade has quarters, and the third quarter grades come on March 28th or so, do you think they would consider those grades even if its 2-3 days before admissions are announced? You think it would make a difference (especially if your going on an upward trend). Maybe have my guidance counselor talk to an adcom directly telling them of my new grades...I'm thinking of schools like HYPC etc.

First, very few high schools will send out quarter grades; they're not sent as a matter of course.

Second, given the timing, I highly doubt that anyone would re-review your file in time to get decisions out by April 1.

Hmm, our high school sends out quarter grades. :O

What if that student got straight 99's?

Unless for some reason they haven't made a decision on your file by March 28th, there is very little likelihood that a rejection will be revisited. That's one of the reasons that schools don't accept, for example, February test scores. 3rd quarter grades are unlikely to either help or hurt the current application cycle.
