Semester Grades

I know that UCs have a guideline about maintaining a 3.0 GPA for your senior year. However, I failed AP calculus, which put me at a 3.0 exactly. My exams were all before the holidays, but I wasn't able to see the grades until a few weeks ago.

I had to deal with a death in the family (and everything else that was connected to it -- don't really want to go into specific detail) and overall, my grades were significantly lower than in my previous years.

Is that a viable reason for the UCs NOT to rescind their admission? And also, what could I do to explain to them that I was not slacking and in fact, I had been trying harder than before?

I'm taking a full AP courseload [lit/comp, macroecon, psychology, environmental science, government, calculus] and so far this semester, my grades are decent.

When you report your mid-year grades (if you are accepted), you will have a chance to explain any significant drop in grades. I've had friends who have got D's in classes (just one per semester) and did not have any reason for it. They ended up having to take CC class over the summer and were not rescinded. So... don't give up hope and make sure you make it clear that you will make up for it.

My friend got a D in AP environmental science and he quickly called Berkeley and explained why he got a D. Although I don't think he had a serious reason such as a death in the family, he did make up something and as a result, he was still accepted. Yeah that isn't UCLA, but you should probably give them a call when you can.

what if its like a 2.83 in the fall and then a huge improvement in the spring?..will i have to explain that?
