Semesters of Shame and Glorious Upward Trend

So, I am a "mature" transfer student with a pretty eventful CCC history. For the first 4-5 years following high school graduation, I accumulated an obscene amount of W's/D's/F's and several lapses between semesters.

Then about 2 years ago a light went on upstairs and I buckled down in a major way. I made up all of those shameful grades, completed IGETC, and now boast a fairly competitive 3.75 GPA. Unfortunately, those grades of shame remain on my transcript.

Question: Despite my current GPA, will my shameful past haunt me come admission time? Of course I intend to explain my heart away in the app and essay, but how much of an impact will that have? I know this is a question that should be directed to a counselor, but I wanted to get your opinions. Also checking to see if anyone can shed some light using their own experience of getting accepted even with a rough past.

I’m have a similar situation as yours and what i’ll be telling you is second hand advice so take it for what it’s worth…

Upward trends do get noticed much more than someone who has been say a straight A student. Personally, i think it could increase your chances if you can demonstrate in your writing the maturity you’ve gained so I think you should be fine =]
