Now that many of us are getting our semi notifications, I was wondering if anybody knew the answers to a few relevant things:

Considering how FinAid has drastically changed in the past two years, and Liberal Arts Scholarships were added, does anybody know whether or not, like some are saying for last year, all semifinalists who don’t get anything, will be awarded with a $10k LAS, but not be a Scholar per se. From what I know so far: 350 semis, 100 get a 2/3tuition John Emory Award, 75 go to finalist weekend, and some unknown amount of the remaining 175 get a LAS.

How does Emory handle need-based grants and a scholarship? If say Bob would have gotten $35k in need grant, $2k work-study, $3k loans, $10k left for EFC, and then got a scholarship of $10k, how would that alter his award? Would only the loans and W-S get dropped and grant reduced by $5k, making Bob effectively pay $10k a year instead of the previous $13k + w-s?

What’s the point of semi-finalist if they don’t give everybody something? It seems a bit ridiculous to narrow it down and then only give half the people a scholarship. How do they choose from the existing pool? Pretty much all of us have near perfect stats. Maybe they should gather us all in a giant stadium and fight to the death. I must warn you though: I have some mad gladiatorial skills.

"While there is no guarantee, typically semifinalists not selected as finalists are awarded either a John Emory Scholarship (2/3 tuition) or a Liberal Arts Scholarship (10K, 12K, or 14K). You will be notified by the middle of February of your status as a finalist or any award offer."

That was the answer I got from one of the administrators of the scholarship. So most semifinalists will get some sort of scholarship.

I got my email at 12pm Emory time (which is the same as my time.) The Scholars Date thread started getting a bunch of semis posting at like 12:01am Emory time also.
