Semi Prestigious School, Low GPA, Decently High LSAT, Please help.

Hey everyone.

I am an economics (major), mathematics (minor) and finance (minor) student at McGill University in Montreal Canada. I was originally an honors political science student in my
first year of studies at McGill; however, I was not interested in the subject at all which in result caused a very very low first year GPA.

My cumulative GPA: 3.3~ (top 22% will graduate with cum laude)
My Major GPA: 3.7~~
LSAT: 164.

My goals are to attend either Georgetown in DC or HKU for JD. I was wondering if I have any chance at all at these schools.

I still have one more year to prep which would potentially raise my gpa to 3.45 and well I suppose I can try to study for LSAT more and get hopefully 170+.

I plan to ED Georgetown and well HKU as soon as application opens.

CHances would be very welcomed fellow cc'ers.

HKU, Hong Kong University?

yes, the university of hong kong. I am of korean origin but my father’s company is based in hong kong, thus making HKU the optimal choice for me as I will be taking over his company 5 years or so after my graduation from law school.

Okay, well this is going to be a shameless Alma Mater plug.

The University of Washington, Seattle, School of Law is ranked #20 and your statistics would be competitive for admissions if you could do what you said and get your LSAT a little higher and your GPA a little higher.

University of Washington’s specialty is in international law, specifically related to Asian law; with concentrations in Asian Law and in International and Comparative Law.

No.

[10char]

Back to Op’s question; a 164 is not a competitive score for Georgetown

Ouch. In many US undergraduate colleges, a ~3.3 would be top half of the class.

US law schools are all about the numbers. Thus, you need to overcome the lower grading system in Canada, by significantly increasing your lsat to 170+.

This year, my friend whos graduating, received offers from Cornell, Georgetown, and NYU law schools (he is in the same program as I am minus the finance part) with a 3.36 gpa and 172 LSAT. If i can bring my LSAT up from 164 to 170+ range, would I have a fair shot at Georgetown/??

and…any information on HKU? its really difficult to find information on HKU’s JD program especially since they do not require LSAT scores.

I have Quantitative 800, Verbal 760 and Analytical 5 on GRE as well would that help if i submitted htat?

If HKU is the “optimal” choice, why even bother applying to GU? Do you want to practice law in the US? If so, aim for a US law school, as bar admission requirements for foreign law grads can be a pain. Not sure anyone here is going to be able to give you much info on HKU. But if a law degree from HKU will help you in the corporate world in Hong Kong, then that would be your best choice.

i am not interested in practicing law at all. I am just interested in the field as an academic.
Georgetown has always appealed to me as a school and I would have gone there as a college student; however, father’s company was in dire situation back then and I did not want to put too much burden on his shoulders thus I chose McGill over University of Chicago, Georgetown, or Cornell. Now I would like to go back to my old dreams of studying at Georgetown or well HKU as HKU is optimal choice for my future career.
