They haven't released the cutoffs yet, but I am extremely curious to find out the cutoff for my state. If the mean scores of my state increased by .5, but the number of students taking the test dropped, can I safely assume the cut off will be lowered or stay the same?

If the avg score of your state increased by .5 pts, but the number of students dropped, would the cut-off avg stay the same or decrease?

The cut-off is based on the top 1% of the state, not the avg score.

I may be wrong, but I don’t think you can tell by the avg since in a particular year you could have many kids scoring higher and many kids scoring unusually low…the cut-off could change, yet the avg might not change…Right? Maybe I’m confused. LOL

The number of students selected from a state depends upon the total number of eligible HS students, not the number who take the exam. So if the number of students goes down, but the total number of students does not change, then should be no change. Every year the number of students who take the exam varies, but the change in cut off scores is generally in the +/- 1 range.

In some states in the midwest where ACT is popular and not too many students take the SAT, the cut off score is lower as the ratio of the number of students taking the test to the number eligible is lower than the east coast states.

So I would not assume anything.
