I know that one of the factors in deciding who advances to the finalist round is SAT scores. However, if you are only taking the ACT and not the SAT, can you still become a finalist?

no. 10 char

no - so take the SAT if you are a semi finalist

but i can't take the SAT! i do so much worse on it than i do on the ACT and i dont want colleges to see those scores.

blahhh. i guess there no way im becoming a finalist

I don't think you have to send the SAT to any schools unless you choose to. Just to the National merit people. And if you did well enough in the PSAT to be a semi finalist you will probably do ok. Seems like you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by giving it a try.

It's true that you don't have to send SAT scores to colleges unless you want to. So if you don't plan to take any SATIIs, you can take the SAT I without any worry. If you plan to take SAT IIs, just make sure you take them all by June of your junior year and send them to all your colleges by the fall of your senior year. Then, for NMF purposes only, you can take the SAT I in the fall of your senior year. If you wind up being dissatisfied with your score, none of your colleges needs to see it, but you will have met the NMF requirement of taking the SAT I.

when does NMF need SAT I scores by?

Last possible test date this year is December. http://www.nationalmerit.org/Merit_R&I_Leaflet.pdf

lollipop27 - you seem to know very little about the NMF process which leads me to think you are not a semifinalist yet. Are you just asking all these questions in case you make it some time in the future?

swimcatsmom - yeah, i dont know yet. it is unlikely that i will make it to begin with, but i was just wondering.

Well if you do make it you will probably be ahead of the game compared to some of the others. Good luck :)
