Are 1 credit seminars graded classes or do just go and listen? In particular: Astronomy 170,171, and 174 intro to astronomy research.

If it has a credit greater than 0, then it's a graded class. Even zero credit dependent classes are serious work.

How do professors grade you for seminars then? Do they just test you on what they talk about?

well, most of the ones less than 3 credits are graded pass/fail, but you definitely still have work for them. if you're interested, go to the first day and see what the requirements are, you know?

Oh ok. Just cause I'll be coming in with 14 credits and my 1st semester schedule (that I have planned) has 15 leaving me needing only 1 more credit to get second year status for class registration. I figured I'd take astronomy seminars since I won't be taking astro 211 till 2nd year (I believe). I just didnt want to have 5 graded classes my first semester. Pass/fail is no biggie.

<====Took 6 graded course first semester and was on the Dean's List for the first and last time.

There is no "year status" for registration just preferential placement within your year. If there was year status by credit hours, then I would be a fourth year on his last semester getting first picks instead of where I am now. Only Echols, Rodmans, and Learning Needs students are the exception.

You can take ASTR 211 your first year if you are taking Calc I and Physics I with it.

I see. I thought I read somewhere that every 30 hours puts you in the next year...guess not. Do you think someone with 28 credits after 1st semester would be in good standing? (aka me)

Yes, you would be okay.

So this has no bearing on registration? Another question: If you take a class at a community college during the summer after a year of UVA does the grade in that class count on your GPA? I'm taking a class this summer and it will not count but I thought it might be different after enrollment.

no, the grade doesnt count, but you need to get it preapproved. theres a page on the a+s website about transfer credit which explains it quite well.

keep in mind that for registration in the spring, you will be the only one with an extra semester's worth of credit so it's not going to put you ahead of anyone except other first years without ap credit... 2nd years will have 30 credits plus the ones they take in the fall, plus ap credit, do you catch what i mean? the only way it helps you is if you come in with more than 30, then you might get a leg up on the other 1st years (i came in with 36, took 15, and registered before all of the other 1st yrs in the spring).
