Hi I'm a junior and I was recently offered an internship for a senate office. I'm not exactly sure which major/ field I want to pursue yet, but I felt geared more to the math/science field. However, I also feel like this is a great opportunity.

Does such an internship look good for college admissions even if you decide not to major in political science?

Or will it seem useless if you don't become involved in the political field?

Depends… state senate or US senate?

it’s a local state senate office.

You shouldn’t attempt to go to extreme lengths to tailor your EC’s to what colleges like. Colleges want well-rounded students. You’re not applying to grad school, so if you feel passionate about an EC you should pursue it. Whether it’s “major related” or not doesn’t matter.

The only time you’ll have an issue is if you’re in a large amount of vastly different EC’s. The admissions counselor may be unable to get a feel for what it is your passionate about during that quick review of your file.

If you want to do it, do it. It’s a reasonably good use of your out-of-school time, and it’s perfectly fine that you think you don’t want to major in political science.

I would definitely do it, intended major or not. But like said, do it only if you enjoy it, and not just to add random stuff to your application just because. I was going to be a North Carolina Senate page this summer, and It has nothing to do with my intended major (meteorology), but I really like government stuff. Too bad the Senate plans to adjourn early.

really? sounds good then. thanks for the advice!

ok. thank you so much!
