Send AP score?

Hello, my daughter is a senior. She took an AP course last year and got a 3 on the exam. Should we send her score to the colleges she is applying to? She's afraid a 3 will look bad, but I'm afraid that not sending any score will look bad. Thanks!

Most schools do not each look at your AP score. I have only seen a couple schools that said they will consider AP exam as additional subject test scores. Don’t send it unless they ask for it.

Does she plan to retake the AP exam? A score of 3 will definitely give her college GE classes credit.

BruinsAR - this is incorrect. It totally depends on what colleges she is applying to. Some liberal arts colleges back east either do not give credit at all for AP classes (some will give prerequisite credit but it won’t count towards grad requirements) or they have increased the score required. I have yet to find a college that my own daughter is looking at that provides course credit for a score of a 3 for any AP course. Some give credit for a 4 in some of the science or language ones, but not a 3. So it really depends on the college.

billchso and BruinsAR are both wrong. It depends where you go for her to get credit, and colleges certainly look at your AP scores (you put them on the common app, duh), though they aren’t a huge factor in admissions from what I’ve heard.

Send a 3, it’s a passing score and shows comprehension of the material, whether or not she gets credit.

I think the OP may be right- not sending looks bad. I just heard that from a guidance counselor and some college admissions reps. If you take an AP course but don’t submit the test it looks odd and potentially raises red flags.

I’m certainly no expert (parent, first post), but there is some rationale to it; if you take the AP course the colleges will expect that you take and submit the AP test. I’m sure there are extenuating circumstances (can’t afford, working a job, etc.), but that doesn’t seem relevant here.

A 3 shows comprehension and avoids the red flags. Send it in.

No, you don’t send AP scores for application. You send them only after you decided where to go. You may self report them on the application when they are good. Getting credits are much further down the road. What I am talking about is for application.
