I received my AP score this week and the site told me that I could lay to send scores to colleges? What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing so?

There is no need to send AP scores to colleges until you know what college you will be attending. To send scores when you have not been accepted is a waste of money.

By the time you register for AP exam for senior year, you probably know which college you will go or at least likely to go. You just need to put that school in the free score report request. All your AP scores will be sent to that school and you don’t need to pay anything. For admission application, you just need to self report AP scores if you want.

Thank you for your responses!

The College Board is a ‘For Profit’ company and they omit certain details when they send these letters to students during the applications process. Here’s what the College Board doesn’t tell you:

When you have your AP scores sent to colleges, the College Board sends them to the Registrar’s Office. The Registrar’s Office DOES NOT forward your scores to the Admissions Office, but instead holds them until you matriculate so they can add the AP scores to your student record. If you pay money to the College Board thinking your AP scores will be sent to Admissions, it WILL NOT happen – that’s why you are supposed to self-report your AP scores.

I hesitate to call The College Board’s letter a scam, but it’s a waste of money to have your AP scores sent to a college until you have made the decision where you want to attend!
