I know Harvard is not an ALL-in-One institution. Would separated submission of Common App and supplement, decreases the chance for Harvard, since it leads to more work for admission staffs?

they actually are the most laid back of anybody on this. Their printed app even says you can send the essay part of the common app separately. They exhort you to send in the common app (minus the essay) as soon as possible! So I am quite sure they won't mind separate submission.

They don't mind separate submissions, as they don't want it to hold people back from submitting it earlier. They do this because they require interviews.

This may seem like a stupid question, but here goes: how can you send in the common app and send the essays later? Is it that just the supplement can be sent later? Of not, if you can send the commn app without the supplements, then if you now cannot change the common app, how can you add the essays later to send the common app to other schools?
thanks in advance

I am guessing that if you send the essay later, it can't be sent electronically. Just a guess - my daughter didn't take this route. I can't say I recommend it, but they do allow it, according to their instructions.

Thanks - but does that mean you would also have to send the essays separately for all the later apps? - since Harvard is requesting the app by 12/1? (yes, I know I should have the all the essays done by now, what can I say?)

They aren't requesting the application by the 1st of December; it's a false deadline to get you to turn it in earlier so that they can create a file for you and to be more able to schedule an interview. The deadline is still the 1st of January.

Wait are interviews really mandatory?

I've heard that they are unless they cannot schedule you one for some reason or another.

if they schedule them, they are mandatory at Harvard. At other schools, they are often highly recommended, but it seems like poor judgement to turnthem down....

do you have more chance if you send by december 1st?

they say you will not be penalized in any way if your app is only complete by Jan 1

chelo: Harvard College Admissions Office: frequently asked questions

Are a student's chances of admission enhanced by submitting application materials before other applicants?
No. We request, however, that students submit the Common Application and the Harvard Application Supplement by December 1 if possible. Receipt of these two forms allows us to expedite application processing and to arrange personal interviews more quickly.

I sent in the Common App minus the essay electronically by writing "to follow after Dec. 1" in both the writing sample sections.

Thanks, but I thought that you could not change the common app after it was submitted to even one school. So, does that mean that each school sees this same "sent after Dec 1"and thus knows that Harvard went out first? And does it matter?

No, you can now make different versions for each school.

Go to the "instructions" section of commonapp.org.
