I know the University of Minnesota does not require essays but would it be okay if I sent one in anyway? I heard from a friend that it would help (when he applied to UMN he sent an essay in although he goes to MIT now).
And if the answer is yes, would any essay topic, obviously not something too weird, be fine?
Submit the optional personal statement only if it strengthens or explains some other aspect of your application that needs bolstering (for example, poor grades during freshman or sophomore year or, as @slime98 is suggesting, a particularly poor score on the writing section of the ACT). Not necessary to do an essay just to do an essay. U of MN admits primarily on stats and rigor of coursework. Here is the 50% range:
@Mamelot
Although it was optional, I submitted a relatively lengthy personal statement talking about my interest in the college, as well as taking the time to highlight my strengths and also to point out a dip in my transcript & explain it somewhat. This might be a silly question, but submitting a really long personal statement couldn’t possibly lower admission chances, could it? I just wonder if the people who have to go through app after app might get fed up with having to read so much. Worried I might have overdone it… But then again I worry too much. Haha.
@hannahyalea I can’t know for sure but I doubt it would hurt your chances. At worst it wouldn’t have an impact. As you felt you needed to submit one, you probably made the correct decision to do so.
As the personal statement isn’t required and UMN is known for having an easy application, you don’t have to worry about admissions reps having to read too many essays. I’m guessing the majority of students with good stats don’t worry about submitting this.
