Over the summer, for my IB Extended Essay I did an analytical piece of writing in French. I understand that quite a few IB students send their Extended Essay to the universities they apply to as supplementary material (i.e. a research project). Although I want to major in engineering, I did the essay in French because it was a topic that was of interest to me. I know that my top choice school (Stanford) is one that embraces breadth of knowledge and multidisciplinary studies, so would it be worth sending in to show that I'm not a typical math/science person?

Im in the same situation. I would just send in the abstract because they are not going to have time to read a 4,000 word paper. Doing that would show well rounded-ness, but also that you respect admissions time.

Thanks for the response, that sounds like a good plan. One thing though: my abstract is written in French. Do I simply write an explanation of what my extended essay is about in English (basically a translated version of my abstract)?

I also found out that my French teacher mentioned it in my recommendation (but literally explained it in one line, so I can build on that) :D

Would I include it in the “Additional Information” section of my Common App?

Although some might say that it doesn’t belong in the Add Info section, know that my S included an abstract of his summer research work in paleoclimatology in that section. For schools that have a science essay section option on their supplementary apps, he may put something else in its place.
