hi

i am applying SCEA this November 1, which is where I would go if I got in.
I will hear a decision by December 15th.

Does that mean that I have to send in/pay for the RD schools applications for the January 1st deadline?

hi

i am applying SCEA this November 1, which is where I would go if I got in.
I will hear a decision by December 15th.

Does that mean that I have to send in/pay for the RD schools applications for the January 1st deadline?

it would be smart to at least prepare them and have them ready to mail by the deadline in case the EA doesn't work out. And quite often people do submit apps to RD schools before hearing from their EA/ED school; that's why the ED app requires you to withdraw any applications to other schools if you are accepted ED.

I would send in one or two of the RD apps before you hear from SCEA. Then, if SCEA defers you to RD or rejects you, it'll be that much less work to do for other apps. And as Mike said, if you get in EA, then you can withdraw the other apps.

However, there is a financial commitment involved because you are spending the $ to send SAT and AP scores and transcripts to the RD colleges, right? Do you think it's ok to put that off till Dec 15th too?

yea...... i would rather not spend 800 bucks if i don't have to....

how does this work for the teachers who wrote the recs...do you ask them to send it in before, or is 2 weeks enough time if they have already written you the recs for the EA school?

You can put off sending the applications until after December 15th. It would be good to have any essays done or at least have drafts or definite plans for them, though, to avoid brain freeze in the last two weeks of the year, when you are coping with the holidays and, presumably, disappointing news on the 15th.

You don't have to send in early scores or any transcripts you pay for, either. There is more than enough time to request them after the 15th.

We gave teachers all of the recommendation forms at one time, with an indication of due date. It is really up to them how they want to proceed. If they want to send in all recommendations at one time, there is no harm to that. It doesn't cost you anything. If they want to wait until after the 15th for the RD ones, that is fine too.

What I would not do is ask for an early recommendation and then ask for regular ones after the 15th. What if the teacher didn't save a copy of the recommendation or prefers to do them all at once, or goes on vacation, etc.? It is more considerate, I think, to give them everything at one time and let them decide how they prefer to do things.

You also have another issue to face if you wait until after December 15: you will be trying to get necessary materials done by others such as recommendations, counselors form, transcripts sent, during the Christmas break and in years past, this site has often had panic posts by people facing a Jan 1 deadline who cannot find a counselor to sign a necessary form, a teacher to write a rec, or even someone to send a transcript, because they have all disappeared for the holidays.

Talk to your counselor to make sure that he or she can turn around your apps in time for the deadline. At my school, they want ten school days of notice so I will have to submit RD apps before I hear my ED decision and thus possibly waste money but what can you do?
