send in sat score before app?

just went on cb and asked them to send my scores out.
so since it takes 3-4 weeks, if they get it in mid-sept, is it ok if i complete my app in say october?

and do the colleges notify you that they received your scores?

Generally colleges won't notify you that they have received your scores. What they usually do is open up an application file (hard and computer file) on you as soon as they receive anything that has to do with seeking admission, such as your test scores, and then when you apply the application information is added to the same file and anything that comes thereafter like recommendations, transcripts, goes into the same file. Thus, you should be OK. However, be aware that colleges sometimes screw up when they get your scores first, so once you apply you should check to assure they also have your test scores in the same file.

Also note, that the "3 or 4" week period for CB's sending scores is an unreliable number. If it is a direct send without other students scores, it is usually shorter. However, a number of colleges accept transmission of all scores of those applying only on given dates (and do not accept rush scores). For example, they may have a date in September or October when CB electronically transmits all scores up to that date for those who have designated that college for sending scores. Then they have additional transmission dates after each test that is given in the fall. In other words, even if you order now CB may not send the score for more than 4 weeks simply because the college's transmission date is later.

Ha, thanks drusba for the detailed post :)

Still, my question is: For instance, if I order CB to send my scores at the beginning of Dec ( or late November ) to schools whose deadline is Jan 1st, will my scores come in time ? And supposing it's a little bit late, will colleges penalize that ?

You now have asked the proverbial "it depends" question. You really need to know what each particular school you are applying to requires. Many have an application deadline but test scores can arrive later; example: UC's require all apps by Nov 30 but they actually take December test scores that arrive in January; many with a January deadline do not require test scores to be in their hands until about two weeks after that deadline but a number of those will even take January tests that do not arrive until February, while some, on the other hand, want test scores in their hands by the deadline date.

If you order by late November to send scores they already have for you, they should get there before Jan 1. But once you get into December, you start to raise issues as to whether they will get there by that time (even things at College Board can slow down during Christmas time).

thanks so much for that drusba ;)

another question:

do we need to send in our ap scores along with our applications? like the ones we've taken before senior year?

Colleges generally do not require AP scores for admission. There are a small number of colleges where you can submit those instead of SAT or SAT II's. However, if you want those to be considered for admission, you should point out scores in the app's or on essays and have them sent so they get there before the time that all materials must be in.
