So I've loved music ever since I was a little kid, and I now play a ton of instruments and also like to create music electronically in my spare time. Would it be a good idea to send in a piece with my application to demonstrate my passion for it to help my ECs stand out? I'm not trying to be a music major, but would it help, hurt or neither?

It certainly wouldn’t hurt, and would differentiate you from the millions of students who just “like” music.

Check the recommendations at the schools where you’re applying. At many liberal-arts colleges and universities, you can submit an “arts supplement” with your application: a CD of music, a dance video, an art or poetry portfolio, a film of a theater piece, whatever you’re good at. Faculty members in the relevant departments will evaluate these materials, and if they give them a high rating, that will be a plus in the application process. (How much of a plus will vary from school to school.) This is a less rigorous/serious review than an audition at a music or theater school. It’s designed to give a boost to kids who will raise the creativity quotient on campus, not necessarily to those who plan to become professional artists, actors, dancers, or musicians.

Even if the arts supplement is pretty bad (I’ve seen some pretty awful ones!) it won’t do you any harm.

there are threads discussing this over at the music major forum

Example: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1119236-where-will-music-supplement-have-most-impact.html?highlight=supplement

My daughter submitted the Fine Arts supplement to the Common App. (she’s not going to major in music)
She posted three videos on youtube of herself. One playing two songs on her violin and two videos of her playing bass(electric and accoustic) with her two bands.
Her reasoning was that it shows her well rounded, eclectic, and accomplishmented.
So, go for it!
