Send SAT or ACT?

I'm a senior with nearly equivalent ACT and SAT scores (so I've been told... 33 ACT and 2200 SAT). I don't have the money to send both scores to every school I'm applying to, but I could swing it for certain schools if you think that would help.

I'm applying to:
Brandeis
Tufts
Northeastern
Boston U
Whitman College
GW

And my score breakdowns:

ACT - CR: 36; M: 31; E: 33; S: 33
SAT (took twice, 250 point bump) - CR: 800; M: 710; W: 690

My guidance counselor thinks I should send both scores to everyone, but refuses to understand that that's expensive and simply not feasible for everyone! For the majority, I'd like to just send one, but which one? For a school like GW, should I send both? I can afford to send both to maybe two of these schools.

Thank you all for your help and advice!

If money is tight, send your very good, well balanced ACT (assuming you took it with essay), and save the money for something else.

Your CR + M is 1510, which translates to a 34. I would send the SAT instead of the ACT.

Do you know if you will be eligible for consideration for a scholarship at any of these schools and if so, are there known score thresholds? The 1510 may do more for you than the 33. (I do not know this to be true but am asking if you have investigated this. The info may not be available for these schools.)

Have you checked to see where your scores fall in comparison to the middle 50th% scores of the enrolled students at these schools?

And, just curious: did your essay score drag down your W score?

@CT1417, I’m curious. What if it is the essay that pulled down the W score?

suzy–oh, I meant absolutely nothing by that question. Just satisfying my own crazy curiosity! I was just struck by the high CR and relatively lower W score. I am surprised how much of an impact the essay score can have on the W score.

I have read criticisms of the scoring of the essay portion of the exam. Don’t know if those complaints are valid. I do know some schools ignore the W score entirely. I can see it on my own son’s portals for his EA schools.

I was just curious because that is what happened with my D’s score - essay really brought down the W part! Sorry to hijack, OP.

No, don’t be sorry! We’re all in this together :)

I’ll be perfectly honest, I don’t really know how to read that deeply into these scores. For writing, I got a 9 on my essay, and answered 6 questions incorrectly (omitted none). Seems to me like those brought my score down equally, but I really don’t know.

I haven’t done as much research into scholarships as I should have, but as far as I know there aren’t any that I’ll make myself ineligible by submitting one score or the other. I also don’t know how to see score breakdowns of schools that are detailed enough to separate the two… I’ve only seen the middle 50% breakdowns, in which a 33 and a 2200 are essentially the same it seems. If you have any advice on where to look for detailed stats, I’d love to hear it! I’m the first kid to be going through this process with selective schools, so I have nobody else to learn this stuff from!

@Sikorsky and @CT1417, you’re illustrating my dilemma perfectly - a 33 and 2200 are equivalent (within 10 SAT points, last time I checked) but the 33 is more balanced, but my CR+M is much better than a 33. I take it that there’s no hard and fast rule about which is more important?

Follow-up question, these scores aren’t different enough to hurt me by sending both, are they? For more competitive, more important schools (to me), I might just send them both and let them decide… I think that would be for Tufts, Brandeis, and GW.

Any other advice that anybody has would be SO GREATLY APPRECIATED! This can be such a lonely process when your brother and parents all went to the state schools  Thank you all so much!

Also… you are not the only ones who are surprised by the CR/W discrepancies… but I was very surprised in a good way  My first try got me 630CR, 660M and 650W, so getting these scores was like Christmas in July!

Your ACT is really good and shows your strengths.
