My daughter is applying to many SAT optional schools. What is the determining factor in whether to submit scores or not? One admissions counselor said to submit them if they are above the reported "middle 50%". So I'm wondering if they are in the range of the middle 50%, or even at the high end of that range should they be sent? I do think she will will get accepted to these schools since she is ranked in the top 10% of her class and has a GPA of 3.9 and has plenty of ECs, leadership and community service. These are not ivies or selective colleges she is applying to. My concern is that sending her scores will negatively affect her chance of a high merit aid award. Her M and CR score is 1260 (testing again in October) and the middle 50% for most of the schools is around 1000-1300. Would love to hear your opinions!

I heard one admissions officer at one test optional school say that if the tests are at or very close to the average for the school to send them and if they are lower then apply test optional. If your D’s tests are at or especially if they are at the high end of the middle 50% IMO you should send them. That way the schools doesn’t even have to wonder if she had low test scores she doesn’t want them to see.

Remember that, at any colleges that have been test-optional for more than a year or two, the posted score ranges represent the students who chose to submit scores. If your student’s scores are within that range, then you might as well submit, on the assumption that lower-scoring applicants chose not to submit scores.

Thank you!
