Send-worthy subject tests for elite schools

For students applying to elite schools (say median SAT 2200+), what SAT subject test score would you consider worthy of sending? Is it different for different tests? Also, are there different thresholds for someone submitting only the necessary 2 tests and someone submitting 2 strong tests and 2 or 3 additional supporting tests? I know this is vague, but just wanted to get some thoughts.

I would say a good score to send to elite schools will be above 750 since these tests have massive curves, making the percentiles ridiculous. As for the tests, I would say that there generally are different thresholds. For Math Level 2, the threshold is 800 since it is an easy score to obtain considering an 800 is not even considered 99th percentile for Math Level 2. For most science tests, I would say it is around 750. History tests are probably low to mid 700 and languages and English is probably low to mid 700s. Don’t quote me on this last part since I have and will never take a language or English SAT II. As for the number of tests submitting, I don’t think there would be different thresholds because few people ever submit more than the required number of subject tests and subject tests are easy to do well in.

@kevinjuan I made a 770 on Chemistry, a 760 on Math 2, and a 720 on US history. According to your logic, I should send my Chem score and my US history score, right? :/

@APDestroyer‌ I’d say yes, but it also depends on your strengths. If you are good at STEM subjects, I would maybe go for improvements, but I wouldn’t highly recommend wasting your time for those extra 30-40 points. As for the US History test, a 720 is a good score for that test, but if you feel you could do better, then by all means retake or don’t submit it. Remember though, these tests are not as highly considered in the application process, so there is no need to excessively retake them. Here are some good pages to look at to gauge you scores:

APDestroyer, you may want to check your percentiles on those subject tests. 760 on math 2 sounds fine (and is according to an MIT admissions officer). However, if your percentile is lower than 75, you may reconsider. If you’re listing a certain subject as your intended major, should that test definitely be a perfect? Got a 790 on physics, which I plan to go into. I really don’t want to be that kid who retakes it for the last 10 points, but the score bothers me. Would it ever bother an admission officer?

It’s impossible to ENSURE that you will achieve a perfect, so no, you shouldn’t retake a perfectly fine score for a chance at perfect.

^ no, it will not bother an admissions officer

Send a math, a science and a humanities test. Hopefully you did well on all of them, but upwards of 700 on the areas you intend to study.
