hi, i’m swiviol and I’m new here my friend (who just got into harvard, btw) told me about the site so I’m here to check it out :). anyway, I just sent brown a CD today, because I play violin and was told that sending them a CD (or if you’re an artist, something you drew … etc) would help increase my chances. So my question is: did anyone else ('09 or earlier) do this, and how did it affect your admission (or, do you THINk it will affect it?)?. thanks :).

CD's and porfolio's usually only make a critical difference in the admissions process when they are really outstandingly exceptional

i asked a brown adcom about this, and she said that cds/tapes/paintings are forwarded to the music or art department. then the department reviews what you sent and gives you a good recommendation or no recommendation at all. so either nothing will happen or you'll get a little edge. unless of course you're the greatest musician they've heard all year. then that will make a huge difference.

ah i'm scared. my tape was not very good...very background static and tons of wrong notes! what to do what to do.

don't worry. they'll probably be impressed that you are committed enough to make a tape in the first place. and if its good, it'll help you; if it's not good, it definitely won't hurt you.

well I don't know if mine was "OUTSTANDINGLY exceptional" but I do think it was pretty good ... the quality was good too b/c my school has a "studio" that you can record shows and music in, and so I recorded it there :-).

i sent in a cd and got in. the music department sent me a letter about stuff afterwards.

nemo: what instrument do you play and what are you stats? i'm not sure whether my sending in a CD was useful or not, because i have no idea the level of brown's music department, so i'm just curious as to your level and that kinda of stuff.

i play the piano ... i don't think i'm stellar or anything but the cd was of good quality and i've won a few awards. my stats were 1590/2350/4.0uw.

did you apply for music, foundnemo? put it as one of your extracurricular because it has been implied by many U's that only if you declare music as a possible major or definite extracurricular on campus that they will listen to your tape and judge themselves.

no, i applied for engineering.

my bro definitely got in because of his violin skill. His stats were not really mid-range for brown. He wasn't like a prodigy or world-touring musician, but he was damn good.

I sent in a short story of mine. For some reason I'm betting they didn't read it...
