Sending a creative writing piece or a sample of writing?

Has anyone sent in an extra piece of writing along with the Why NU essay and been accepted? I just called the admissions office to ask, but the lady seemed pretty cold and didn't give me any information at all...she was just like "yes." when I asked if I could send one in..

I feel like the Why NU essay doesn't really let me show my personality that much, so I want to send in another piece of writing..

Doesn’t the Common App essay let you show your personality?

Unless you’ve been published, I would find another way to let the AdCom see who you are; I would avoid inundating them with paper. Simple rule: if everyone did what you are proposing to do, would it hinder the AdCom in getting through the applications? I suspect it would, which is why they don’t encourage it.

Yes, my personal statement let’s me show my personality; however, it focuses mostly on my career goals and Autism…the piece I wanted to send in isn’t too long at all, but it shows a completely different side of me that doesn’t come across in the personal statement.

The secretary made it seem as if it’s normal to send in an extra piece, but I was also afraid of bombarding them with too many things. However, since it’s not too long and is a very quick, flowing read, I thought it might be ok…I’ve also been told that if they don’t want to read it, they won’t…so it wouldn’t really be a negative, would it?

While I am not applying to NU, I am the recipient of several regional and national awards for creative writing. Even given my credentials, I have been advised against submitting supplementary materials at some schools, as it may be more hurtful than helpful. This is especially true if you have not been published or had your writing recognized; if a piece is not up to par with the school’s expectations, it could work against you, rather than bolster your application. However, your reply to WCASParent’s post shows that you are confident in your work and are likely to submit it regardless of what advice we give.
Hope this helps (even though I know I am late joining this forum) and best of luck!

I spoke to multiple individuals at admissions as well as my counselor, and they all told me to send it in…my counselor said that if they don’t want to read it, they don’t have to, so it won’t necessarily hurt…i agree though that at many other schools (like Stanford, for example), it will hurt you to send in extra pieces as they highly advise you send nothing extra…my counselor said that since NU only has the Why NU essay, it shouldn’t be a big deal. Hopefully that’s true…
Thank you! I ended up sending in the supplementary piece (pretty short and a quick read), so hopefully it won’t hurt me. I guess I’ll find out in a few weeks
