Sending a letter after deferral

OK, so I applied EDI and was deferred. I followed up by calling the admissions office, and they told me that I was deferred primarily because I'm taking a significantly heavier courseload this year (4 APs, as opposed to 1 or 2, along with Vocal Jazz as a zero period) and also because they wanted to see how I held up in a larger applicant pool (barf).

I just got my first semester grades. A's in all four AP's (Studio Art, Chemistry, Literature & Composition, and U.S. Government) along with an A in a gym class (required for graduation) and an A in the music class. The only B I got was from the school newspaper, which is a class, and that's a kind of complicated issue involving new grading policies and a certain amount of skulduggery regarding editorships (not on my part). Plus, I acted in the winter show, participated in a musical revue, and swam for the swim and dive team.

What I'm really asking is: should I send a letter? Kind of a "HEY GUYS! I am still interested please accept me please please please" and maybe with a sample of my writing, which is my major passion in life. Thoughts?

Yes, definitely! Show them what you've accomplished in this past semester - your fine grades (you might want to explain the B in newspaper a bit) and continued commitment in extracurricular activities. A deferral from Pomona isn't like a deferral from some schools where they reject very few and defer like 75% of the early applicants. At Pomona, if you get deferred that means that the admissions committee truly is undecided about your candidacy. To put it simply, you are on the borderline, and a letter showcasing your achievements and continued interest in Pomona might just tip you over to the "accepted" pile. Good luck!

I agree. Updating Pomona on your progress will demonstrate that the school is still your number one choice.

Good luck!
