Sending a resume

Is this a normal thing to include when applying for college? I am applying to MIT, Harvard, Stanford, and the like, and my school recomends sending in a resume detailing extracurriculars and awards in addition to the application. Is this something that will help or hurt me? Does it not make a difference? Do you know people who did it, or is it an uncommon behavior?

Thanks a million for your responses!

you may not need a resume, but if you dont think you can add this into an essay, it is good to talk about your main ECs. let's say your president of the class, give a small description of what you do to help your class. let's say you are part of some small club, dont expand on it because it isnt meaningful.

I'm submitting all of my apps online...and often times they give you about 5 words space to elaborate on ECs. Is that b/c they really want that succint of an answer...or what?

All my teachers have told me to send in a resume.

Oh, I'd like to know that answer to that too!

I read in this college planning book that you should send in a resume BUT my school hasn't mentioned anything about sending one in.
