Sending additional essays?

I want to write an additional essay, explaining my poor junior year grades. I’m not going to try to evoke pity or anything, I just want to explain how my grades dropped so low, due to family problems. If I sent one in, would they read it? Should I do it, because I don’t want to sound like I’m trying to elicit sympathy. I just want to explain the reason for my first ever C’s.

Oh and off topic question, but for common app, if you choose topic of your choice do you have to list the topic also?

I have always head that to explain circumstances like family issues and health issues, to have your GC write it in the counselor rec. S/he should know how to word it in the best way. Talk to your GC (kind of late considering that it's Christmas break till after the app is due) to try and see how to show Penn what you went through last year in the best way possible.

Well the thing is that it's kind of a personal issue and I don't feel comfortable disclosing it to my GC. What can I do?

Then write about it yourself. Whatever you send to Penn is taken into consideration.

Thanks, is there anyway I could send it online?

You can always send it through common app if the essay is truly meaningful. if it's a list of explanations, you might want to just put that as a supplementary essay or the 217 essay.

Problem is I already submitted part 1 of the Penn specific app and gave my teachers the Penn rec forms. What to do?

O yea, the Penn app does not have an additional information section. I guess you could just send them a letter. Call them to see what information you should have on it (like SSN, bday, name, etc).
