Sending AP Scores?

If my transcript shows my high school AP scores, can I still send an official report of my AP scores to Harvard to emphasize them? There is a lot on my transcript, so I don’t want them to be overlooked.

Thanks!

All college Admissions office’s request that students self-report AP scores on the Common Application because the College Board automatically sends an Official AP Score Report directly to a college’s register’s office. The registrar’s office does NOT forward those scores to Admissions – instead they hold the scores until you matriculate to be added to your academic record. The College Board will not send an Official AP Score to a college’s admissions office, so it’s a complete waste of your money to send an Official AP score report to any college for the purposes of Admissions, as Admissions won’t receive those scores.

Gibby, the College Board sends AP scores to colleges without the student making such request? Is this true? How do you know?

The CB does not send AP scores unless a student requests them to be sent. You can self-report AP scores on the Common App and then have the CB send the official scores to the school you will attend, assuming your school wants them for placement or credit purposes.

I believe what he meant was, once requested, the score report is sent to the registrar’s office, not to admissions.

Really? So when the College Board sends SAT scores they go to Admssions but when the College Board sends AP scores they go to the registrar? At every college?

@augosmith I can’t speak for every single college in the world, but at Harvard, AP scores go to the registrar’s office.

Right, but gibby makes a global statement about all colleges.

How do I self-report AP scores? I know I have to check “yes” for the testing page question on the Common App. Then what?

Yes, I’m making a “global statement.” If you don’t believe me, call the College Board and ask them.

  1. When you request a score to be sent, the College Board sends SAT and SAT Subject Test scores directly to a college's Admissions Office.
  2. When you request a score to be sent, the ACT sends ACT scores directly to a college's Admissions Office.
  3. When you request a score to be sent, the College Board sends AP scores directly to a College's **Registrar's Office.**

So, student’s SELF-REPORT their AP scores. On the Common Application, go to TEST SCORES and you’ll see this box

From the PULL-DOWN menu select AP TESTS, and select CONTINUE. Then from the PULL-DOWN menu, select the test and your grade. It’s that easy!

Thank you so much! I didn’t even know that existed… Also, on the drop-down menu, there are options for both Calculus BC and Calculus BC - AB subscore grade. If I got 5 on BC (and consequently a 5 on the subscore), would I need to have a separate score for each, meaning that I would have to report 1 more AP than the number of AP tests I took?

Also, do you think it is a good idea to self-report my AP scores even though they appear on my transcript? (I just wanted to emphasize them)

FYI, it is possible to score a 5 on BC and not score a 5 on the AB subscore.

You can list the subscore if you wish, and if you have room. Obviously, it’s not critical, since the BC score supersedes the AB subscore.

Yes.

Is it useful to also self-report ACT and SAT subject test scores even if I already sent the official reports?

I don’t know how useful it is or not. However, I’ve always failed to understand why applicants don’t just list them when they know they need to send in the reports. So, I’d suggest listing them.

Ok thanks. There’s a question that asks for “Number of ACT scores you wish to report,” and on the preview it shows up as “Taken: ____”. Is it basically asking how many times I’ve taken it then? If so, would taking it more than once look bad?

No. Most students take the ACT/SAT more than once.
