Ok so I went down to talk to my guidance counselor the other day and to give her the school report form where she has to write a recommendation and stuff. She told me she'll fill it out when I give her my entire application, which she claims she has to send out. Is this right? You see she's a horrible guidance couselor and she has lost people's applications in the past. One kid actually didn't get into a college because she forgot to send his application and the deadline passed. So is there any way that I can send the applications out myself and have her just send in the school report or do I have to do it the way she says??

Some GCs will make you give them the whole app, others will let you send it on your own. In your case of the horrible GC, ask her! Say that you either don't feel comfortable giving such sensitive information to her, or that you'd really prefer to send it on your own to calm your nerves. Maybe there is another GC that could fill you in on your schools policies.

No matter what happens, MAKE COPIES OF EVERYTHING! Check in with your GC frequently to find out how things are going. Call your schools to see if they have received your app yet. If you are worried that your GC hasn't sent the application in time, tell your schools, and then send them a copy, just in case.

tell your gc you plan to submit your applications on-line (if you plan to)

at a lot of hs's the practice of having the gc submit everything is a cary-over from when everything was done in paper. if you explain you want to do it on-line, she may have no problem with it.

and keep on top of your status at the schools you are applying to. some let you check on line, others often don't mind if you call.

That's what we did at our school, and the GC double-checked our part of the app to make sure everything looked right. Once she got her part done and the teachers finished their part, she mailed it out for us. She enclosed a postcard with the application that the college sent back when the app was received to make sure it got there.

As has already been suggested, MAKE COPIES of your app. That way, if she loses it or it gets lost in the mail, you can resend it. My GC told us a story a couple years ago about a kid who didn't hear anything back for a really long time. He called to check on his application around decision time, and they never got it because it was lost in the mail! He quickly mailed the copy and got a decision (I think he ended up getting in to the school in question).
