Sending Deposits (reg. app)- is this binding?

Or do you just loose your deposit money? Has anyone found themselves in a situation where they have sent in deposit to 2 schools so that they can extend the deadline a little further.

thanks,

M

It is binding. As Stanford puts it: If they find out you are holding a place past the reply date of May 1, they are rescinding their offer - and the other college will likely do the same. Sending in two acceptance deposits is frowned upon, and consequences may be severe. What's more, colleges are going to find out when you don't turn up in August.

Thanks for the reply..... it's difficult to squeeze in a last trip to see schools when decisions come in only a couple weeks prior to commitment.

Hi, Just want to add my two cents here. I know that in the acceptance letter my son received it stated that once you send in your deposit that you must withdraw from all other colleges. Please call and ask before you send in any money.

One school asked for tuition AND housing deposits, and said that both were refundable prior to May 1 if the applicant ultimately decides to go elsewhere. So each school is different. CALL and ASK!!

Call and ask - sending 2 deposits into, say Harvard and Columbia, is wrong. Sending a deposit to housing at your local state school in order to hold a spot while you wait to hear from Harvard, just risks your money. You have to check for the particular pair of schools in question. Rule of thumb - only one deposit to one selective school that has EA/ED/ID/EDII and RD admissions, schools with rolling admissions may need housing deposits to hold a spot.
