My daughter is appling ED to a school with deadline of Dec. 1 and all of the required parts of the application have been submitted and received by the school. She will be getting her report card tomorrow and expects that her grades and class rank will be consistent with her performance based on the first three years (Either all A's or all A's except a B in calculus). She is taking 3 AP courses, 2 Honors courses, and advanced art and wind ensemble as electives (plus one more AP independent study, which she won't be getting a grade in and won't be shown on the report card.) Do you think she should ask the school to send an updated transcript with the first marking period grades. The college obviously already has her class schedule, but no senior grades. THANKS.

How can it hurt?

You're right. I just didn't know if this is what most people do, or if the college expected it, even if they don't say so.

The first quarter grades at my S's school were available as of last Monday. The school sent them out to all the colleges where students applied ED, usually with a deadline of Nov. 1. I believe the colleges expect the grades to be made available.

Thanks. Our school guidance office would never do something like that proactively. It is hard enough to get them to mail out the things that are absolutely required on time!

I don't see how it would hurt but, in our experience, the schools we've dealt with don't expect them. Most of the schools my Ds have applied to don't even require a mid-year report. It may be best to check with the school your child applied to, in case you would be sending something unnecessarily.

Same question, except my final semester grades are out already -- my counselor sent the mid-year report, will this be included in the evaluation?

I guess it can't hurt but we have only sent grade reports when required. All my kids' schools have required mid year reports. Last year I had a D who applied EA and I only recall a midyear report there (after deferral) and to all her RD schools. I do not believe she had to send quarter reports to that EA school.

My second D's schools all have midyear reports. However, she has one EA school and THAT school REQUIRES a quarter grade report by Nov. 1. Our grades came out a week after that and those were sent to that school. She has not sent them to rolling admissions or anywhere but will send midyear ones out. I personally would just send grade reports that are asked for. I suppose if you really want them to have the quarter grades, send them but it is not necessary. I agree it can't hurt.

I spoke to someone in the school's admissions office and she said that, if my daughter wanted the first marking period senior grades to be considered in her application, to have them sent postmarked before Dec. 1.
My thought is that, if the grades are as good or better as grades in the first 3 years, it can't hurt to show that the student is doing well in the senior courses.

We had the opposite problem. First quarter grades are usually just sent to the parents to let them know how things are going. Usually there are not a lot of grades in at this point. My D had one school ask for them but she had 3 B's which is not her norm. Two of the B's are AP classes. As of now many of these grades have gone up to A's. She just got the request. Her counselor is letting her teachers write in her grade as of now and sign it as well as including quarter grades to show the upward trend. I don't know if this will still hurt her or not. The school in question is considering her for a scholarship so she wasn't excited to hear she wanted these grades. I'll let you know how it works out. There is always something to worry about!

I don't quite understand how your school works with grades. At our school, we have four marking periods plus a final exam and each of these counts equally toward the final grade for the year. Any interim grades during the course of the marking period would not ever go to the guidance. Did the college ask your daughter to go to individual teachers to get interim grades before the marking period was over?

If applying early, I think it is almost a necessity to send first quarter grades. First quarter usually ends in mid to late November..I do think the colleges are expecting SOMETHING from the senior year.

sgiovinc, again I'll say, it depends on the college. My one D who applied E.D. did not need to provide any senior grades, either first quarter, or mid-year. The bulk of E. D. decisions have been made by the end of November when the date is Nov. 1 or 15., which most E.D. due dates are. Any E.D. acceptance, as with R.D., is conditional on successful completion of coursework in progress with similar grades expected. A final transcript in June is required. So, no, it's not "almost a necessity".

I think you should send them. We have three marking period per year at Son's school. (Q1, S1, S2). Q1 grades just recently closed and are identical to your Ds ('cept his B+ is n Advanced Chem, not Calc). His schools doesn't send out Senior Q1 grades unless requested by the student. In this case, he has requested because they show a consistency in performance tied to an increase in EC responsibility.

If they show your D in a good light (which they obviously do, congrats)...send them.
P.S. He's an ED applicant.

Every school is different, I guess. My S's high school has two semester report cards and two quarterly "progress reports" that are not official and are not part of a student's permanent record. The teachers just use the quarter reports to communicate with parents. S's high school counselor said the district will not send out the 1st quarter grades even if asked, but that if his EA college needs information from this year, he would look at the current grades in the classes and give them those (they are posted online for parents/administrators and are updated weekly.) -- Momof2 in CA

Our school only has 2 semesters thus 2 semesters of grades. The students get quarterly reports just to let them know how they are doing half way through their semester. They are not official or kept on records. Interesting how different each school is.

I am so upset with my GC---I applied ED and they were supposed to send my 1st Q grades, which I got last Fri. They just put them in the mail. I called the school today to make certain my app. was complete-they couldn't check for me because my app. was being "reviewed." I told them my school is just sending my 1st Q grades!!!!They said if they have the grades they use them ..if they don't..they don't.

My GC called the school (after I talked to him) and spoke to the Head of Admission's office and said he will fax the current grades. Do you think it's too late if my app. is being "reviewed" or, if they know the grades are coming, will they look at them?

I hope so--I think they will be needed since they were my best grades ever....

Any input will help, I am so very upset....

bump bump bump

Primab:

Since your grades are good, there's evry chance that they will be taken into account even if your application was being reviewed before the grades were received. Can you send an email to explain the situation to the adcom? Make sure NOT to blame your GC. He was by no means negligent in not sending out the grades the minute they were available. At our S's EA school, applications are not going to be reviewed until after Thanksgiving. Your college is starting quite early.
Just explain that when you enquired about sending in your report, you were told that your app was under review, that your GC immediately faxed the report and that since your report is good and shows an upward trend, you hope that it will be taken into consideration. This probably will earn your app another look.

Best of luck.

Thanks so much Marite for responding. I am a wreck-barely slept last night. I don't have a name of anyone in the admission office to e-mail-and perhaps I am dumb..but I am counting on my GC to make this right. I am going to speak to my GC again on Monday and make certain he calls -or does whatever he's supposed to do-to follow up on the fax. He needs to make sure that it was indeed received and to make certain that my app, if already read, will be re-read with my grades included.

Do you really think I should also e-mail the adcom office or should I rely on my GC? I go to a small school that supposedly has a good reputation. I know when he called he spoke to the head of admission's office-actually to her secretary. I won't get to do that. He told me.."Don't worry, there's time." But of course I am worried--the decisions come out in 3 weeks and if they were already "reading" my app. how will I know they will take another look?

Oh gawd....this is so awful....
