I want to send a computer program ive been working on to MIT, which i wrote about in my optional essay. What is the best way to do this? Should I burn it on a CD and send it or should i just use email? Should I try to keep everything together in one .exe file or can I make an installer for the program?

I guess you could send it to them, but I don't know if they really care so specifically about the program that they have to actually use it.
I think it would be sufficient to send some print outs of a screen shot and descriptions. That's kind of what I did last year for my app.

sounds cool. I don't have any tips, but what does the program do?

Its just a simple artificial life simulator thingy ive been working on for a while. It shows how these virtual herbivores and carnivores evolve strategies from random behaviors through natural selection.

I recall this question coming up in previous years also. IIRC, the response from Admissions was along the lines of, "We'd prefer if you tell us about this program you wrote rather than send it to us, since we're not likely to have the time to load it up and run it, and we're not coding/compsci experts so we can't evaluate that aspect." People did send in CDs of programs in previous years, but it will probably be just as good (and perhaps better!) if you're able to accurately describe not just what it is and how you did it, but more importantly why you think it's cool and what you learned during the creation of it.

As I said in another thread, they're not looking to grade you on your project. They're looking to learn more about who you are and what motivates you to be your best self. Perhaps you can communicate that through your essays without sending the program itself.

Well i already wrote about it in my optional essay. Im just trying to add anything that might help to my app since i got deferred.

I'd suggest sending a couple of screen shots...just like you did with The Box...That program was amazing - I really liked it

or make a screen-movie of it running.

what's The Box?

The Box is a part the Caltech app

wait, like the box in the Rice app? where they let you put anything you want into it?

the most nervewracking way to run college admissions, ever.

yeah, the caltech box is like the rice box except it's an entire page

So just checking, this doesnt have to be sent in by the RD app deadline, right?

Nope, but ASAP or sometime in January would be good.

lol can anyone else confirm this? I just want to be absolutely sure

Mike wrote, "I, too, am a deferred applicant. I want to send in a supplementary recommendation, but I don't think it will be ready by January 1st. Would it be okay for the admissions office to receive my recommendation after January 1st?"

Yes, that would be just fine. Please get any new materials to us by early February to ensure full consideration.
