sending in additional essay

<p>After being deferred from Harvard EA, I started reflecting on some parts of the application I could have changed. One major point of concern is that I didn't do the optional essay, largely because I did not feel like I had anything that really needed to be conveyed at that time.</p>

<p>However, now after finishing my other supplements, I have wrote an essay that I feel really brings some character into my application. Can I submit this additional essay to Harvard now since I am technically being considered in the RD round? If so, what is the best way for me to send it to them and make sure that they are able to take it under consideration. </p>

<p>It would probably be weird to send the essay through the online site in which you can send them updates etc. Should I just fax them a letter and attach my additional essay/</p>

<p>thank you for that link gibby–very insightful. However, the reason why I am tempted to send an additional essay is that I actually did not send one for EA. I can understand the harm in just extraneously sending another additional essay when one has already sent in an additional essay. </p>

<p>My test scores and grades are up to par, and the only other updates I could possibly send are affirmations of me continuing to do my extracurriculars. </p>

<p>I understand that sending a bad additional essay could hurt me. However, I strongly believe that this new essay not only gives a new dimension to me but reflects better writing than my common app essay. </p>

<p>Writing another essay, even a spectacular one – one that is better written and gives the Admissions Office a new dimension on your personality – may not be as effective as writing a letter about why you want to attend Harvard. Imagine yourself as an Admissions Officer – which would you want to read? Which would show more passion and interest in the school? It’s easy for every deferred applicant to submit another essay – it’s harder to define what Harvard offers you that you cannot get at another school.</p>

<p>I agree with gibby. I’m also a deferred SCEAer who didn’t submit a supplemental essay, but I don’t think I’m going to bother submitting another essay now, especially since I also thought my Common App essay was already quite well-written. What I will do, however, is to send in a letter to Harvard affirming my interest, as well as discuss some new things that occurred since I sent off my app. I’ll also get a non-academic recommendation letter to be sent in.</p>

<p>I agree with what you said Gibby. I will be submitting a letter to re-express my interest in Harvard. However, I realize also most deferred applicants will do this as well. Therefore, I do not really think I would be gaining or losing anything from re-expressing my interest as much as I would by also attaching the additional essay.</p>

<p>Sorry if I seem pretty staunch on sending it–I mean I probably will, whether or not it has much benefit. I’m just wondering if they will actually read it.</p>

<p>I personally do not know how the Harvard admissions office thinks, but I personally would rather see another spectacular essay on the personality of the applicant. Isn’t it a little obvious why these students are applying to Harvard? The atmosphere, the students, the curriculum, the clubs, the activities…I’m sure Harvard has heard it all before. They know they’re the best.</p>

<p>That’s just my personal opinion though.</p>

<p>**That being said, there is no reason why you can’t accomplish both in one essay. ;)</p>

<p>I know it says you can use the online fileroom form to make additional updates but that seems less genuine than if I just faxed a letter. </p>

<p>Does anyone know if we are allowed to submit letters by fax?</p>
