Sending in recordings...

I've seen a lot of threads around here of violinists, cellists, clarinetists, etc. sending in recordings of them playing.

Well, I'm a guitarist, and I was wondering, should I send in recordings of my band? We're progressive metal, and we've opened for a number of large acts, such as Dream Theater, Symphony X, and Into Eternity. We don't have a vocalist, so our music is all instrumental. Its very classical/jazz inspired, and is of excellent recording quality (dished out 400 bucks for that recording studio).

In general, as an arts supplement by all means send it. It appears from your description that you are playing at a professional/semi-professional level (defining pro as being paid for your performing services).

You don't specifically state if you're applying to a music school or for a music major/minor. If you are, my answer is going to change to a degree.

For a non music major, depending on where you apply (and if you have a reasonable level of proficiency on an orchestral instrument) or if there are ensembles that could use your guitar/keyboard/or percussion talents, there may be some small merit money for a committment to play in an ensemble.

It can't hurt, and may well help you.
