Sending in Recs

I see on the UVA website that it says that Recs should be e-mailed or faxed in. I take it this means that you invite the teacher/counselor thru the Common App to submit the Rec and don't give them the envelopes...

Yes. It seems dicey at first but it is actually better than paper b/c you will rec. a confirmation that the teacher submitted the rec. If not you can always stop by and gently remind the teacher that it is coming due.

Don't do fax. Stuff can get lost. Trust me the electronic method is better in terms of confirmation and the school really seems to prefer it as well.

Good Luck.

my school requires that everything be sent by mail. you can apply online but the transcript, recs, and anything else must be sent by mail through the guidance office. i know this system isn't as reliable but will i be penalized in any way for this?

The Common App only allows required recs to come in through their system. Because we only require one rec and the counselor's rec fulfills that requirement, all teacher recs should come by fax.

I'm going to blog about this shortly.

Swoops, your GC's info can come by snail mail and your teachers should fax their recommendations.

Okay, thanks, that would be very helpful. This whole process is trickier than I thought it would be with each school having it's own particular requirements and filing methodologies!!

thanks dean j!!! but my school requires that everything that is sent to ANY school come through the guidance office. in other words, all teacher recs get sent via snail mail in the same envelope as the transcript and GC rec. yea its a policy that drives students and i'm sure admissions offices crazy but its easier for our guidance office that way and for them thats all that matters. so yea but thanks for your help anyway!!!

Swoops, your GC can't dictate how your teachers submit their recommendations. They might be stating a preference as a requirement.

I'm going to guess that you are at a private school? We have seen some odd rules from private school counselors who try to manage the process for students. Their intentions are good, of course, but in the long run, they take away the student's chance to manage the process for themselves.

Sorry for the bad info. I guess the common app has changed some things.

THat's okay--just shows how confusing this is!

Dean J, you are right about the private school. The office tries to dictate everything we do, but really we can fend for ourselves. I spoke to one of my teachers about it asking if they would be willing to fax it and they said no, that they have to follow school policy. Oh well... I hate to complicate things for UVA, especially because it's my first choice.

This isn't anything like how it was last year. Weird.

I'm still utterly confused. Tell me if I get this right:

I print out the CommonApp Teacher Recommendation form
I give it to my teacher to fill out
My teacher fills it out and writes a letter, and then faxes both of these documents to UVa

As for my guidance counselor, she can either do it all online or physically mail in the commonapp forms/her letter.

Yes, 2-iron. You might find this chart easier to understand if the text instructions are confusing.

Thanks, Dean J. More schools should put reps on CC.
