I sent in the FAFSA and CSS Profile to all of my schools on 2/1, but my parents still haven't even started taxes! When are tax returns due? I'm supposed to send THIS year's (2006, the ones due this April 15th) returns, right? Sorry if it's a stupid question, I'm just not sure about this whole tax deal.

If you did your FAFSA and Profile, and you haven't completed tax returns yet, they were both completed with estimates. FAFSA was done as "will file" as the status for your parents (and you?). Some schools will give you an estimated financial aid award based on these estimated finaid applications, but the awards will not be finalized until your 2006 taxes are complete and the forms amended to reflect the accurate info on the returns. This is NOT the year to wait until April 15 to complete your tax returns. It is good that all has been submitted with estimates as it gets you in the "queue" so to speak. However now (ASAP) you and your parents need to complete your 2006 returns and amend the FAFSA online (not difficult at all...and change your filing status to "taxes completed") and amend the Profile (a pain...you have to print it out and handwrite the changes and mail to the colleges). If the college wants to see tax returns, they will want your 2006 returns.

Thanks! I'll have to tell my mom to get on the taxes NOW.
