I want to send a letter of intent to my reach and realistic schools. In other words, the schools that are not my safety net and I might have a chance of not getting accepted.

I'm looking to send a letter to these schools:
Boston University-realistic
Johns Hopkins University-reach
Yale-really reaching here
Brandeis University-just added it to my list
Notre Dame-reaching far

sat 1800, ok extracurricular sports,100+ service hours

going to need extra stuff in my opinion to get into the top schools. I want a great education and a nice atmosphere as well.

Is a Letter of intent a good idea? I want to let them know I'm really interested.

None of those want anything other than what you are supposed to submit as part of your application. A letter of intent will not be seen by those who actually decides whether you will be admitted and likely will be treated as a request for information resulting in your receiving a college brochure.

There are some colleges which consider demonstrations of interest to be important, Emory is one, but that is rare for any higher ranked colleges. In fact, a number of them tell you that they don’t want anything other than what is supposed to be submitted with application.

Moreover, what would be the purpose of a letter of intent-- you would be telling the college that it is your first choice and will attend if accepted. So how can you possibly send that same letter to 5 colleges?

I was going to send it just to Boston University, which seems to be the best I can get for my grades and what not. But seeing their website, I agree with you on this. I already gave information to JHU and BU for contact and brochure.
