So I received a letter from Pitt today saying that they want my mid year transcripts (applied 10-31). And in all honesty I was 97% sure I was going to get rejected.

GPA 3.5W, 3.37 UW
SAT 1160/1750
ACT 25
RANK 104/338

So anyone with knowledge of the competitive fashion of pitt admissions knows that I clearly fall below the average standards (atleast according to previous years).

I submitted a funny, unique and establishing essay along with a very well written recommendation. My essay sort of contained a plea for acceptance in the last paragraph as this school is my number one choice. I applied undecided to the Arts and Sciences school.

Long story short, I really want to be accepted. What should I do?
At the end of the first quarter, I'm receiving over a 4.0, and hopefully the same at the end of the first semester.

Should I retake ACTs? (catch is PITT won't recieve them until mid feb)

Should I send another essay?

What are chances of being accepted/ statistics or stories of those in my same position in years past? Please post your experiences or if you're in the same situation!

Also post any opinions :) thanks!

If you already have an essay sent in- don’t send a second one because it really won’t add anything to your application.

I would retake the ACTs if you think you can score significantly higher (a few points) to the point where it becomes a Pitt-competitive score.

The main thing is keeping your first semester grades as high as possible. All they want to see is how you are doing in your senior year (the same, better, or worse). If you’re doing much better (4.0 compared to your 3.5) that shows significant improvement and I think would be enough to secure an acceptance. However, if it doesn’t, then at least you can retake the ACTs (ideally doing better) and ask for reconsideration with the better scores.

I received the same mid-year request:
GPA: UW:3.84 W: 4.94
SAT 1100/1720
Rank 32/460

Really good ECs and I currently have a part time job and prior volunteer experiences.
I’m a part of Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society) National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, and a lot of other clubs

Pretty sure my recommendations were good, if not great.
Essay was decent.
I know my SAT scores suck but in all honesty, i never really got a chance to prepare for the SAT because things always got in the way. I thought I had a really good chance of admission since someone at my school was a lot less qualified and received admission, but i thought at least everything else would make up my SAT scores.
Currently, I am expecting 5 As and maybe 1 B for my 1st semester grades. I am taking 4 AP classes and 2 honors classes

***Applied to the Arts and Sciences School

What are my chances?? I visited Pitt and I really like the setting of the school, but if i get rejected here, I’m really questioning my options at my other out-of-state schools.

Did anyone else get a request for mid-year grades???!???

I agree with awesomeopposum that improving grades alone may get you in but as an insurance you should retake ACT or SAT. I have heard (during a visit) that Pitt superscores across SAT and ACT, so even if you improve significantly in one section it can give you a leg up. Best of luck!
